He used to own the shure se425 and he claims that it was significantly better than the tzars 90 and he wants to achieve something of similar performance or greater. His music player is cowon z2.  He was about to throw away the Tzar 90s but I advised him to instead wait for the response of the head fi community to see what is the recommended course of action.

Can someone explain whether the tzar 90s are worth it for my friend or if he needs to amp it to do it any justice? If so, how can he amp the tzar 90s with a cowon z2 DAP.

Please advise.

Do you or your friend have a amp to try them on? I would recommend trying them on a desktop rig (an O2 should suffice), or even a FiiO portable amp should be enough to see if the amp can open the sound up some. I haven't heard the Tzars, but if I were to guess the would sound better than the SE425. Try an amp with them.

He doesn't want to spend another dime on heir. The question I was asking originally is how would he be able to connect his DAP to an amp? What I've seen mostly are people using a usb dongle from an ipod but I'm not sure if it's possible to do with a cowon. Any ideas?

He has a fiio e7 but he doesn't know how to plug his dap to the fiio. Should it be headphone out-> fiio in or is there a usb solution?

My friend's a funny guy. He's owned a fiio e7 for a year and it's been sitting in the original box this entire time. He's using a cowon dap.

I'm not familiar with how Cowons operate, does it have a line out? If so, that is where you would want to plug your amplifier into.

That's the problem. Isn't it ideal to be using the Usb out like what the ipod does?

AFAIK the Z2 does not have a line out the D2 did of sorts. The way to utilize an amp with the Z2 is to plug the amp into the headphone out of the Z2 and the Z2 into the amps input.

That's cool. Thanks! :) I'll let him know.

I believe he will see a significant difference when using an amp.  Best of luck.

Ipods use the LO (the charging port is a true LOD). Cowons don't have true LO to my knowledge so can't help you there. You can amp the HO but it won't be as good as from an actual dedicated LO.

What would be the best aftermarket cable for some Heir's? Copper or silver? I'm getting a set of 5.0's and just curious about the whole upgraded cable thing. I've read silver will give a brighter presence than copper. Don't want it too bright. Recommendations are very welcome.

Actually the sound coming from the HO of your cowon to your amp to your iems would sound better than just using the cowon by itself. Search for rmaa graphs for your cowon loaded (headphones) and no load (an amp).

Opinions vary on whether or not the sound is better from the ipod lod or amping the HO.

Are you sure you need an aftermarket cable? Lots of people here like the Magnus upgrade. Nice and flexible, sounds just fine. My experience with the 5.0 is that the tips can make a very significant difference, and even if there is difference to be found between cables, would be very small compared to getting the right tips for you.

+1 for the Magnus. The ergonomics of the cable are extraordinary.

I understand about the magnus. However I've already ordered and can't get the deal when purchased together. So I was just wondering about other options, and more specifically the sonic differeces between silver and copper.

Silver tends to be on the brighter side. I've found it to make the sound staging more spacious, sometimes thinning out vocals and taking them along with the mids slightly further back. Copper tends to add warmth to the sound, is less detailed than silver but has a more organic sound to it. Depending on the gear I could prefer either.
