I am torn between buying the 598's as I think maybe there has been some improvement somehow in the sound quality/manufacture, but can get used or refurb 595s for maybe $20 to $50 less. Does anyone know if the 598's sound any better and though I know it may be only $50 more, are they worth it? If I dont get much more for that money I really need to save it. Mostly listen to classical, jazz, celtic, diff types of rock. No rap, heavy metal, dance, or hiphop.

This is a review of a pair of free IEM's I recieved from DUNU as part of a give away contest they recently held here on Head-fi. When I recieved my package the first thing I notices was...

Best closed headphones I had heard - very flat response, almost no midrange distortion, very easy to drive (good for portable), good soundstage (definately better than K240), good isolation, but...

Overall excellent buds, very good sound quality, especially for their price, the medium set of tips fits exactly in my ears and provides a near perfect seal. Bass is very detailed, but not...

I'll keep this very short. They are very smooth sounding. Treble toned down so not so good for rock but have a magic about them that makes them better than mark 2. I use them with a '89/'90...

As far as I know, there were no changes to the sound between the models. Just a re-deco. Ditto with the 555/558

I've read the headphonia review you posted. I do not think, however, that there were actually any changes made to the sound of the headphones by Senn... Certainly, I've not seen any measurements that would indicate there were.

Personally, I've not read any comments that suggest there weren't any changes. All the comments I've read make clear that the 558/598 series is very different sounding, most noticeably in the treble.
Of course, I could just be reading the wrong posts, except that the measurement bear out those comments:

If you look at the other headfonia review, you can see internal pics that show they changed the enclosure design which affects the sound.

Thanks! Subtle, but some change - especially to the 3k-6k range (5db ish - probably more than just sample variation). I stand corrected.
Go for the 558, it's the same price as the 595 and supposedly better.
I have the HD 558s and always regretted not going the whole nine yards and getting the HD 598s. Ultimately I returned them and purchased the HD 598s. They are back to their cheapest price of around $173 on Amazon.
I had the money but went with the 558s because of the color
(plus, after mod, the difference is supposedly very slight).
