Best general use headphones for $50 - $75

Hey all, I am selling my new replacement pair of skullcandy Hesh headphones (received after the first pair broke), and I would like to buy a set with better sound quality, especially in the mids and treble where the SCs were most lousy, and preferably not covered in skulls and kickin' urban graphics.blink.gif

I searched a bit and found a lot of model names deemed to be good, but I would love to get more focused advice. Some models i looked into included:

Sennheiser HD428

Sennheiser HD448

Grado iGrado

Superlux HD668B

I would also be interested in purchasing a used set, as long as that is usually considered a reasonable option and most headphones don't wear out quickly.

Should I be wary of buying used? Are there other options in the price range I should consider?

I listen to a variety of music, centered mostly on rock, blues, and jazz, since these are what I teach most often. I don't do too much hip hop, so heavy bass isn't necessary, though I would like to get into some techno. At this point, i'm not planning on plugging into any nice headphone amps; I'll probably be running straight from my computer mostly.

Thanks for the help!

Sort these in order of importance to you: Sound quality, isolation, comfort, portability.

Easy. Sound quality >>> comfort > isolation > portability.

Well, I own a pair of HD428's, and just finished burning them in.they're really comfy, about a 9/10. And the sound reproduction is great. The bass.thumps, but by no means is it like the "punch" you might get from a different pair of cans. I've heard from others that the hd428s can be modded tp be 448s, and they do sound really good. Over a long time the top might crack, as I've read on reviews elsewhere. Great value for you money IMO, they also come with a 2 year warranty and a 1/4 inch jack. As for the Igrados, dont bother. They won't even compare to the sennheisers, as not only are they mass produced, but other reviews on headfi rate them fairly low beacause they do not compare to other heads in their price range. HD428s are $45 on amazon as of last week, whenI purchased them. Hope this helps!

However, the Hd428s /48s do not compact at all, and if you purchase them from an unauthorized retailet, the warranty is voided (I believe). But if you mod them, which is fairly is easy and can greatly.improve performance, this was already going to happen. Headphone.com has a lot of graphs with frequency response, which you can use to determine what they are good for. Sennheisers are great for rock and jazz, classical, and country.

The sennheisers are certainly mass produced though, as are the igrados; i'm not sure why you indicate that to be a problem with igrados. Thanks for the opinion!
