Spark/pop noise coming from speakers?

Thread Starter

I'm using a w4s dac-1 USB input w/ a st-250 power amp digitally attenuated from the computer. I'm also using foobar wasapi 24/44.1khz and 50ms latency. I randomly get pop/static spark noises when I change the song and I know it's not my computer because I tried it on 3 laptops and 2 computers getting the same thing.

Also, I have looked at all connections, my surge protector is a furman m-80x having my amp/dac/speakers/computer connected to it not sure if that's causing the problem or not. Anyone know a fix for this problem? Help would be much appreciated.

Speakers are electromotion ESL

One of my assumptions is that I do not have a pre-amp to control the power going into the speakers, but instead controlling the volume digitally on my computer.

Did you by any chance change Preferences->Advanced->Playback->Fading->Fade on Seek / Fade out / Fade on pause (1 or more of the 3) from the default of 100ms to 0ms?  Without fading, changing from one song to another is an abrupt change in the sound and can naturally cause the kind of noise you're talking about, especially on hi-end equipment or setups with overemphasized treble.  If it only happens on song change or seeking there's really nothing to worry about though.

Update - Spark seemed to have lowered dramatically after the removal of the bottom foam used for packaging and unplugged for 8+ hours

Disabled equilizer due to suggestion above, will update this thread if problems still come back.

Not using USB anymore; using toslink again haven't a/b'd but it seems I have stopped the noise from being TOO loud

Resolved - Badly shielded USB cable.
