NEW Sony Walkman Z Series mini review!!! - Page 201

Just tried Jetaudio as per the suggestion of Dyaems. The app totally blows away the rivals, namely, poweramp & neutron.
Comparing to the Sony player, it still falls a bit short. The grounds for my claim are as follows:

- The Jet is a tad warmer, while the Sony is more neutral. For me, this is a con of Jetaudio as I prefer originality.
- The Sony has provides more instument individuality compared to the competition
- When turning the bass up, there is a bit leakage into the mid range when using Jetaudio, I think the ClearBass accounts for this.
- The guitars are more pronounced on the Sony but the Jet does very well compared to Neutron. The drums are also more punchy on the Sony app.
- The Sony interface is totally out of the league. It's minimalistic and intuitive.

So, i'd say that the Sony is the winner here but i'd recommend everyone to try the jetaudio aswell as your liking and opinion might differ from mine.

P.S. I tested the two using default EQs.

all good beerchug.gif

but the sony doesnt most of the features than the jetaudio/poweramp has. the sony player IMO get more forward midrange/upper midrange as you crank up the volume. i agree that the jetaudio is a tad warmer but when making the sony app's volume go lower, matching the jetaudio's volume, the difference is somewhat negligible. although im using a walkman F, not a Z hehehe...

i love the sound of the stock app + Z and i wont replace it with a different app if ever i have one!

Greetings all.

I am coming in on the tail-end of this thread, so forgive me for not trawling it's entirety first for answers.

I'm tossing off between a used Z1050 (AU$150) vs Cowon D3 which also has S/PDIF out.

My questions here:
a) what is the max. sample-rate of audio data the Z1050 can process?

b) with the latest firmware, can the USB connection drive off the shelf USB DAC's?

c) The latest firmware update from sony.com.au:
The product page - specifications, state Android OS v2.3.
Whereas the latest firmware update says - Android 4.0.

If that is correct, are the product pages (specifications etc.) be updated?

"NWZ-Z1050/Z1060 Firmware Update
Article ID 530025 modified 06 Dec 2012
What does this download do?...
Contents of the update...
Android 4.0 ..."

Thanks for answers.
Michael.

The sampling rate is 44.1khz I guess, had problems playing 96khz files. And yes, the latest version is 4.0. It provides native flac support, ability to create playlists on the go, enhanced battery life and fixing of numerous bugs. Have no idea about the USB DAC connection.

@basshead Then what do you want us to do???

I'm trying to install the latest firmware that I downloaded from the Sony site, but I get this error message- The update tool failed to update the software of the NWZ1000 series(MSC)....

Has anyone else run into this? I have the Sony NWZ-Z1050

The firmware is region dependent so you have to make sure you download the right one for your device

All Android devices are limited to native 44.1. Your player may play higher sample rates, but these will be downsampled to 44.1 on any Android device. Rather irritating given I have recorded my vinyl at 48k.

No.

Latest firmware update is indeed Android 4.0. Many of us are running this with great results. However, it is recommended that you do a factory reset after install to avoid some very buggy behaviour from the Sony media player when playing FLAC. Personally I have not done this as I cannot be bothered reloading all my apps and data. I found the "clear data" command in the Sony player's settings had the desired effect of eliminating the buggy behaviour. It would be interesting to learn whether there is any buggy behaviour on a new Z1000 that is updated to 4.0 without ever having had prior data.

I have downloaded the Australian firmware, which is where I am.

Well, if you bought it from an Australian retailer and it came with a retail box you should be good. Units from the grey market won't update as they don't have a serial number.

PS:Just noticed you mentioned MSC  (mass storage ?) in your message, that could be why it didn't work

Thanks sicko.
The Sony Australia firmware update notes say Android 4.0, while the product web pages still say Android 2.3:rolleyes:

I bought it from an authorized Sony dealer in Sydney.

MSC doesn't stand for mass storage, but the problem was that I didn't have enough room  (10%) on the hard drive of the walkman. Thanks for your suggestion, which did point me in the right direction. Thanks to Sicko too for your advice.
