Yet Another Headphone Advise Thread

Hey everyone. I am a new head-fier in need of help. Let me start with a background first.

I've never been a big fan of headphones until recently. I am one of those who loves big speakers. I have a pretty good system set up and i might quite probably qualify as an "audiophile". Recently i decided to give headphones a try but i'm clueless about what to look for. (Ok, not clueless as i've done some research but please treat me like one)

First of all, price. I am thinking i can go up to 300 bucks limit but anything near 250 would be preferable.

I listen a lot of 70's prog rock and at times the recordings sound pretty harsh themselves and i get really irritated by it so i wouldn't want to make them even more bright.

I'm not an basshead either but i like them tight. Excessive bass is not needed.

Things i listen include anything from 60's to 80's, jazz, blues, experimental, instrumental...You got the point.

Correct me if i wrong but, as i understand open-back cans present better soundstage. If so i will prefer them as isolation is not an issue.

Comfort is also pretty damn important. I listen A LOT and leather makes me sweaty so i'll pass headphones with leather ear pads.

I don't want to buy an amp yet. I might drive these through my stereo amp but for the sake of portability i would like to listen them without an amp and get a similar taste. Don't know how it would sound but i might build myself a DIY headphone amp when i have the time.

These are the things on top of my head. Any help will be much appreciated.

For portable I would go with V-Moda M80 or V80 ( True Blood ).  They are on ear so your ears will not get quite as hot and they sound amazing.  I am very particular about fit and comfort and had no negative qualms regarding the V80 or M80.  I do think they are one of the best cans if not the best under $200.  They also have the option to customize the ear piece covers at $45 so you slap on whatever icon you like and have a sweat set of personalized cans.  The LP and LP2 from V-Moda sound bad compared to the M80 and V80.

$200 ( $245 with customization )

For something with a more open sound that is not portable try the Audio Technica ATH-AD700.
