Good portable setup

Hi, first post I'm kinda new to this high end stuff, so here goes.....

I've had enough of mp3's iPods and those ****ty white ear buds, they just don't cut it any more, so i have decided on this setup:

Cowon x7 160gb
triplefi.10 (which i can get a really good price on)
and converting all my Cd's to FLAC

so, are there any flaws in my plan?

also, could the triplefi's handle full volume of the x7 without distortion?

Thanks in advance smily_headphones1.gif

Sounds good. (You see what I did there?)

Also I'm quite sure you'd be screaming in pain from extremely loud volume before you hear any distortion =)

Yes i did see what you did there, and might i say, Hilarious smily_headphones1.gif

awesome (i came across this configuration after like a week of late night research) , just wish the x7 used 320gb 1.8" SATA drives instead of the smaller 160gb 1.8" PATA ZIF i believe them to use ( couldn't find any info about that), my collection should be around 150gb compressed with FLAC (theoretically) but I'd like some room to move
maybe in the 'X8' ?

Cheap and good setup =)

J3 might have better SQ at the expense of storage space. You won't get distortion and clipping from X7 before you go deaf. basshead.gif

other than the X7 whats a high SQ alternative to the iPod classic? (got have a high capacity, don't mind flash, but minimum 64 GB price not really a problem)

BTW my current, setup is an iPhone 16Gb my collection is in AAC and i have UE 400vi's (good for making phone calls) but really it's just "blah"

For high capacity with great sound it'll have to be ipod with fostex hp p1 but that combo will cost close to 4 times the price of x7. I won't recommend colorfly or hifiman because it'll be quite painful to scroll through big library with them.

You may want to consider a 32gb j3 with a 64gb sd card though.

cool I'll look into the "fostex hp p1", would this combination be applicable to a 64gb iPod touch, or is the classic a better music player?

edit: that fostex is hardly what i would personally call portable confused_face(1).gif , it's gotta fit in my pocket, that's what i call portable

Haha no choice. That is the most 'portable' solution with the best SQ and largest storage space. It works equally well with itouch and iphone.

Actually Sony is releasing a new DAP soon. You may want to hold on a little wait and check that out.

The Sony player will fall under what I call truly portable =)

UELover i did searches on your portable setup, doesn't seem too impressive (but then I'm a noob), except for the buds which are a ridiculous price. Could you teach me something and explain your reasoning's behind each component?

You can click on my nick and look at the stuffs I have owned in the past. =)

The most important component is your earbud. Next will be the amp and the source. A custom iem with the iphone will already sound darn good. But when you go into the high end, devices matching is more important than anything else. Cheap things can sound awesome while expensive things can sound like crap.

With that said, unless you have an astronomical budget, the TF10 with X7 is a good starting ground. I guess the Sony NW-Z1000 could be better. Who knows =)

I'd buy the best but i have a habit of losing things early Saturday morning after one too many wink.gif

so your saying that the player doesn't really matter, so long as you have a good Amp/DAC and buds?

Hmm the player is your amp and your dac combined. More expensive equipments tend to split out those functions but you will lose much of the portability.

For example, iPod (the player) with CLAS (DAC) with a Portable amp is an example of a setup with 3 devices performing 3 separate roles.

iPod also has its own internal DAC and amp but most people like to bypass it because it is no good.

X7's internal DAC and Amp is slightly better than that of an iPod.

Player, depending on how you look at it, can be a pure storage and it can also be an all in one device.

So, it certainly matters in your chain of audio. Upgrading on either end will improve your listening experience. =)

but the 'fostex hp p1' is particularly good cause it receives the digital signal through the 30 pin connector and does the DAC and Amplification itself, i think i could deal with an iPod but i would have to use Applelossless as my file format............... ah I'm learning, id save money buying an iPod classic over a x7 to put toward the fostex, but then id need a really good set of buds to get the best out of the fostex, or would the TF10's do the job?

edit: this might sound like a random question but do you know of any leather/fabric cases which would hold the fostex hp p1 and the ipod at the same time?

Go for one item at a time. TF10 is quite a good iem. If you jump all the way, you will never learn to appreciate how good the gears in your hands are.
