Ok im a huge newbie when it comes to headphones but I could not get a definitive answer anywhere so I will ask here. I need a pair of closed headphones for listening to primarily hip hop/rap. My budget is around $400. Im open to buying an amp too however i want it to be portable. here are the ones I was looking at:

http://www.headphone.com/selection-guide/top-picks/denon-ah-d2000.php

http://www.headphone.com/headphones/pioneer-hdj-2000.php

http://www.headphone.com/headphones/sony-mdr-xb1000.php

http://www.headphone.com/headphones/shure-srh940.php

any other suggestions are greatly appreciated

You could easily happen on a Denon D5000 if your budget is 400(usd I'm assuming)

However I feel if portability was your main concernn, then XB1000 and D2000 aren't contenders.

Thanks for the reply. Its not the face that they are portable, its so i can wear them for long rides in the car/planes without bothering people too much. But i dont want to be lugging around a huge amp. So try for denon ad-5000 and if not go for ad-2000? Or are the other ones valid options? Again, thanks for helping me

The Denons leak too much sound/let too much sound in to be enjoyed on planes.  The engine will overpower their sound unless you listen at sounds loud enough for the person next to you to be annoyed.

Sitting right next to someone on a plane, even a very well isolating headphone will be heard by someone. However note, no headphone is going to block the sound of the engines. I've tried several times now. You end up turning up the volume to make up for it and you end up unknowingly giving yourself some ear damage that way. IEM's are better for passive isolation if you're worried more about that.

The Denons do not leak so bad that you should not consider them. They're excellent. Consider them. The D5000, if you can nab that headphone, is rather excellent in every way. Isolation is better than an open headphone, but not quite as isolating as something that tightly clamps your head. So long as the pads are touching skin, sound leaking goes down a lot. If they're bent and not touching because of glasses frames for example, they will leak more.

Again, buying a headphone for an airplane is different from everything else. If you want a headphone for everything else, go Denon D5k. If you must have something for the airplane, I'd suggest something else that is very isolating (I found the Beyer DT770 to be quite isolating).

Very best,

So does the XB1000.

I would choose between the other 3. The Denons and XB series are bass heavy, but the other 3 you've selected aren't particularly bassy...

What kind of music do you listen to?

If you ask me, getting a Denon or the likes for general purpose at home listening or in the car listening, then getting a cheap pair of IEMs for plane usage is probably the way to go.

thanks guys. so its narrowed down to denon 2k or 5k, or the sony's. Now its not specifically for airplanes. mostly general use. I just dont want to have an open headphone where everyone hears my music. if someone could show me a link to find the denon 5ks for 400 it would be appreciated.

There's not a huge difference between the D2000 and the D5000.

The 7k is where the jump comes. The 2 and 5 use the same drivers.

I've heard the exact opposite.  I've heard people say the jump is from 2k to 5k, while 5k to 7k is very subtle.

Well I can understand that a bit. Housing is important and the D5k and D7k are pretty much the same in that regard, but you can mod your D2000 (with wood cups) and then you've got a D5000.

Of course it's a bit more technical than that, but the driver is the same in the 2 and 5.
