Help Help! I am in Headphone H3LL!

Thread Starter

Let me start by saying this is an amazing website, and also an unreal audience.  Before 3 days ago I had no idea there was a 'fine wine' community for headphones.  I have been reading and leeching information from the forums for days (I'm ashamed and should probably make a donation or by a T-shirt), but I am still in a bad way.  Let me explain.

I have a pair of headphones, if they can be called that, which I use when I am in the office.  They are Sony's with no model number ... so here is a picture:

The foamy things have worn out and are all jagged and wearing these for the purpose of cbt's, webcasts, and even just listening on a flight to Florida gives me a headache.  Before Sunday ... I would have told you that headphones come in two varieties:  The kind I can buy at Kmart and the kind folks on VH1 wear.  Now, somewhat overwhelmingly, I understand there are as many varieties and purposes as there are stars in the sky.  I downloaded the guide, the lifehackr post, everything I could to help ... but at the end of the day, I honestly need to talk to someone and get some advice.

I tried to do some drastic things.  I headed to BestBuy ... bought a pair of skullcandy TiTAN earbuds.  OMG, it felt like a scene from the wrath of khan.  So, I think that ruled out ear buds for me.  Then I decided, what about what I had ... some type of headphones that go around the back of my head and don't mess up my hair.  So, I bought a pair of Sony 'speakers on a stick'.  I have no idea what else to call them because that is what they look like ... a loop with speakers on the end that stick in your head.  Well, 5 minutes into wearing those and they felt way uncomfortable and honestly, I think the guy in the cube behind me heard more of it than I did.

So, with credit in hand I go back into Best Buy and I just stand there, literally staring at a grocery store aisle full of headphones and .......................... I left.  Nothing.  That is what I have now, nothing.  I couldn't make a purchase.  I hope others can relate to this post, it is just too much.  How am I supposed to know what is worth a darn?  I can't try them on.  I can just read some cryptic crap about 11mm drivers and integrated whatchamajiggits and from that I make a decision.  That is why I have to come to this audience.  I need expert help, and to my knowledge there is no such thing as a Dr. of Headphonology that I can visit and pay 50$ to figure this riddle out.  Wouldn't that be nice, if there were Dr.'s of everything ... that way you could just pay them and boom you know. .... anyway.

The riddle I am trying to solve is this.  I work in a corporate environment.  I sit in a cubicle.  People walk by all the time.  I want something comfortable because there are times when I have to be on these web audiocasts for 3hours + and then am on a plane within two hours later.  So, ... I need comfort.  On top of all of that, I would really like something convienent.  Not batteries that I have to worry about charging all the time.  Its bad enough with my crappy phone.  Sound ... Sound you say?  Well, I would LOVE something that actually sounds good.  Sounds like when you play a song on your stereo at home and love the CD.  Nothing that sounds like it is coming through a megaphone because that goes to comfort as well.

Honestly ... budget isn't really a big deal (as long as longevity is proportionate to $$$).  I just don't want or in reality can appreciate something that would cost 1500.00$.

So this is my dilema, and I am sending this out to this community praying someone will read this novel and loves to give advice as much as I like to type mini drama's (lol).  Anyway ... even if this just goes into the great void ... Thanks for listening and providing a forum for folks to meet and share.

Welcome to head-fi. As is customary, I must say "sorry for your wallet!"

Methinks you'll get a better response here though:

At any rate, are you adverse to buying online? I really don't recommend Best Buy. Try HeadRoom or Todd the Vinyl Junkie, as they'll actually answer your emails and talk to you like a person. They'll be able to steer you in the right direction.

In terms of headphones, it sounds like you want something closed (given your office environment) and circumaural (fits over the ear) or an earpad-type that fits on the ear. If you don't mind spending a little, I strongly recommend the Beyerdynamic DT 1350. You can find those on HeadRoom or Amazon easily for $300 or less. Very nice headphones.

If those are a bit too rich for your blood, then I recommend looking into the Sony MDR-ZX700 for $120 or the Sennheiser PX-200II for about $90.

Yeah I second the Sony ZX700
