The combination surpasses the W4 in every aspect besides comfort. It is expected since retail price to retail price the red  se 535 is US$200 more than the W4.

My views on cables are that they can definitely change the sound signiture drastically, some for the better some for the worst.

Hello!

I'm new to this forum and just bought some clear SE535 and I really love this headphone, as I loved my previous SE530.

But what's the point with the special edition compared to the regular SE535?? You seem to think that the red one has a better sound whereas it's pure cosmetic here, right? I don't understand. That said, the red colour is cool.

About cables, I'm surprised to read that it changes sound as well, but maybe you're right, even I don't think there's a real difference, is there?

See you guys.

There is a drastic sound change (for the better) in the reds. I do not know why they decided to label em as limited eds instead of branding them into a new model.

Check out my review for a comparison between the two :)

The red Shure SE535s looks cool, but I don't quite like their grey cable. So upgrading cables would be better I guess...

Haha, they don't actually look too bad.

Just bought an amp, has made the W4 competitive soundwise on well recorded material.......interesting. Haven't listened with the red 535 yet as I am waiting on a Baldur mk2 LOD. All I can say is that the W4s NEEDS an amp to make them sing!

Do update us on what the kind of amp which you feel best suited for the red se535.

I'd prefer something small like the pico slim haha!

Round Two - Westone W4

Continuing my update, I have managed to get the W4 sounding better than the red 535 with Baldur mk2 cable.

Firstly, the W4 definitely needs a amp! I am using a Cowon X7 as source. I recently purchased a pure silver with gold, oyaide 3.5mm plugged cable for source to amp. What a difference it made! Most importantly it has taken the sharp and edginess out of the W4. Staging is better, more definition all round. The bass is now more solid, weighty with a lot more slam. The mid has been pushed a little bit more forward, you now have the singer ahead of the lead instruments where before it used to sound in line. There is now so much more detail in the highs. However, on a badly recorded CD I am still getting some sibilance and sharpness, I have a few ideas as to eliminating it.

I had a sample Baldur mk2 3.5mm cable and with the same source and amp it sounded real good. I returned it and have ordered a viablue terminated quad Baldur mk2 wired 3.5mm cable. This should be arriving this weekend. Can't wait as from past experience with the sample the combination is stunning but never A/Bed with the W4 combo. The red 535 with Baldur mk2 just doesn't work with the silver/gold cable sonically........

Price wise, it is the same between both cable combinations....

More to come.

PS. I am now using Sony buds on top of a stemmed Comply. This made a huge difference!!! best Bud yet for the W4

Just picked up this cable tonight. A quad wire braided 3.5mm source to amp cable.

The set up with the red 535 with Baldur mk2 cable.

Initial thoughts, sounds absolutely STUNNING. Improvements all round. Big improvements!

The pure Silver with Gold 3.5mm cable bought especially for the W4.

The set up with Westone W4. Yesterday this was great! Today...hmmm. Will A/B over the weekend extensively and post opinions on both set ups.

A little mention of the amp that I am using, it's a bit of a giant killer sourced by my cable man. More about it later.

Hey there I'm using red 535 but I want more bassy sound for the rock pop music. Any suggestions?

I just wanted to jump on and thank member spkrs01 for helping me in the decision to jump onto SE535 reds. THANKS! smily_headphones1.gif they are really amazing.

Now, the issue of cables:

1) The genuine cable is too short for me frown.gif, probably only by 5cm so I have to change cables and have ordered Belden cables (by same guy that sells Baldur MkII on ebay). I just can't bring myself to wear blue cables!! can always upgrade later I suppose

2) None of his cables seem to have the adjustable cable tensioner (as per Shure's genuine cables). This is a big problem for me because I can only wear them comfortably behind my head with an adjuster... I think I will have to DIY something when they come. Don't you have this problem??

3) Where did you buy the Baldur interconnect? I'd really like a iPod LOD that is not a giant rip off...  DIY is not out of the question

Sorry for giant first post, thanks
