Limited 1840 impressions (from Jude so far) + Tyll's measurements (compared relatively with other headphones). These two sources corroborate "bass-lite" with slight tilt upward. Not what a lot of folks are looking for. I see the negative feedback not as an attempt to undermine pricing structure, but rather as an attempt to seek out and destroy all crappy headphones, especially those that cost a chunk of spare change.

I see the negative feedback as a good thing. Prevents hype so people don't waste their money (and retailers don't lose on returns). If the headphones actually sound great once people get their grubby hands on them, all the better. They would exceed expectations rather than disappoint.

true, purrin.

but, if i relied too heavily on the critical reactions to headphones on this forum, i probably wouldn't own any...  tongue.gif

i certainly wouldn't own the HD800 - which measures "bright" but happens to be my favorite can.

that being said, jude's impressions of the new Shure did temper my desire to purchase them...  quite a bit in fact.

so, touche!

I'm starting to think that the word bright is described by individuals who likes dark cans.

What headphones do you want them compared to? I'm going to try them later this month hopefully.

HD600, SRH940 and/or K701.
And why not HD800, HD700.
Or anything that sounds similar, and hopefully cheaper.

I have samples of  both the 1840 and 1440.  (I'm taking my turn with the 1440s first, then will swap with my colleague who has the 1840s..  I also own a pair of 940s, as well as a number of other very good cans. I have heard the Hifiman, Audeze, and Sennheisers, at home, with my gear and my music, for lengthy audition periods. I have not had time to give the 1440/1840s a serious, long-term listen, but what i will say for now, is that the 1840 and 1440 are serious products, and are very well made, and their pricing does not seem out of line for what they offer sonically, and in terms of fit and finish.

That's what I  was thinking, since I  like my srh940 despite being criticized. They are just not for "mainstream taste".

I thought that SR325is were pretty awesome sounding.  For about 15 minutes...

The original SR325 with pink drivers and black metal housing is actually a very smooth sounding headphone. Then Grado decided to make it like aural knives in subsequent iterations for some reason.

Degrading sound quality of lower model to justify price of higher models. Just like the hd555 , that are hd595 with foam.

I 'm wondering if  shure didn't degraded the SQ of srh940 on purpose, by putting drivers very close to ears (because so much improve when you increase depth of ear cup).

I'm starting to think that most people (esp. in this thread) have not a clue as to what unamped live music/voices actually sound like. Their only point of reference is other headphones which is ludicrous.

Unamped live music/voices are usually quite bright.  That's my personal experience as a violinist who's performed and watched performances in many settings ranging from solos and quartets to full scale symphony with choir.
