senn hd598 vs hd 6xx without amp

So, after I got my cowon, I've been wanting to give it some justice and now I have the money to dish out on a new pair of headphones.  After a day or so of research and encountering things I'd never head of before like amps and ohms, I think I've found a pair that will fit me, however I still have a few questions.

I'm not particularly interested in getting an amp just now.  If it changes anything, my cowon j3 has an output of 29mW.

I listen to a great range of music, going from indie to folk to electronic to metal.

So what I want is an excellent pair of headphones without an amp.  In essence, does the senn hd 600/650 sound better without an amp than a hd 598, or should I stick with the 598 with the lower impedance.  OR, should I be looking at something else.

Thanks for any help.

You should definitely stick to the HD598 if you don't intend to get a dedicated amp. While certain aspects of the HD600 might stil sound better when used unamped, the sound will just be much flatter and incoherent compared to a phone that is properly driven. OTOH, HD598 is a terrific phone that is very versatile, but it cannot reach the potential of a properly driven HD600. I would still be inclined to say that a well driven HD598 would be quite preferable to an unamped HD600. In Conclusion:

Unamped: HD598>HD600

Properly Amped: HD600>>>HD598

Alright, thanks a lot.  That's what I was thinking, but I just wasn't sure if they would sound similar without an amp.
