tracy chapman, and the rest?

Hi guys, just found out about tracy chapman yesterday, and like her style of music.

Any other recommendation about other musicians who have the same style as her? 

what year was she famous? 90's? or 80's?

Black female guitar playing Folk/Pop singers aren't standing on every street corner and none other than Chapman comes to mind, but I'm sure someone here will be able to help you out. I the meantime, here's an interesting read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tracy_Chapman

I can think of a few examples of black female guitar folk/pop singers: India Arie, Odetta, and Corinne Bailey Rae come to mind.

Try Joan Armatrading's eponymous first album.

Pre-dates Tracy's first, but Joan's is a timeless classic IMO. And very well recorded too.
