to HD598 or to not?

long story short, i can get the HD598's for a good price. i've always been interested in these cans and now seems like a good opportunity to seek advice. i own the grado sr225i's and that's about all excluding IEMs.

Music: hiphop, classical, dubstep, jazz, pop.

Source: probs laptop with Fiio E7+E9 combo.

not too familiar with full size headphones yet so if people were to give me their honest opinions that would help greatly.

Thanks and happy holidays! (eventually)

Well, classical and jazz (and maybe pop) they should be good at.  Hiphop and Dubstep they may not do as well with.

What did you want opinions on?

If the price is good, they could be a nice compliment for the acoustic genres, and they're soundstage is nice.

I recently bought them (for the second time), and I'm really enjoying them this time around.  They dethroned my FA-003s, which is saying something.  I have them running from a uDAC-2 to a Fiio E9, and they sound great.  The only thing you *might* miss is a little extra heft in the lower end, but they are otherwise versatile for a wide variety of music.  And if I want more bass, I just go with my DJ100s.  They will definitely have more bass than your SR225is.  They're just very competent and pleasing to the ears.  Great soundstage.

I'm a big fan of these. I listen to a wide range of music, from "serious" orchestral through jazz and pop right to IDM, electronica, hip-hop, stoner metal and ambient drone. The 598 does an excellent job with all of them. No, the bass doesn't have the reach of some other headphones, but the notion that it's weak or deficient is nonsense, at least to my ear.

Going from an SR-225i will make you a bit sad..at first. They just sound so different to me and I have both. I love both of them.

It's best to just not compare them and learn to enjoy them for what they are. Comparing the HD-598 to the SR-225 to much would make me hate the HD-598!

The HD-598 will be much warmer, a lot smoother sounding with less treble, sound clarity and detail. The HD-598 does have some engaging mids, but not as engaging as the SR-225, but that's a good thing sometimes.

The HD-598 is not even remotely fatiguing to me, but not as boring as the HD-600.

HD-598 definitely has a much larger soundstage. I think it's same to say the HD-598 will be better for more genres. SR-225 definitely seems like it has less bass than the HD-598, but more treble and more forward mids.

Since the E7+E9 is a fairly bright setup to my ears, it'd be a very nice match for the HD-598 I think. If the HD-598 is fatiguing (it should NEVER EVER be for most), try removing the E7. Should be perfect though.

Go DT990 PRO or HFI 2500.

HE-300 if you want a bright neutralish headphone that has good extension.

FA-002W if you want a nice neutral warmish detailed headphone.

Look at this price.

Very best,

i'll see if my store can make the 990's into 250 ohm instead of 32 first and make it into a priority list. thanks!
