Setup Recommendations

Hey folks,

 

I've been looking and researching headphone setups and I think I'm about to pull out what little bit of hair I have left trying to figure this out. I will be gaming on a Desktop computer that only has onboard sound but I will be using head phones in conjunction. I was looking at the Astro A40s but they seem pricy and I understand the sound quality is not that great. The one thing I do like about the a40s are the mixamp pro specifically the ability to tune the sound and voice which would be great for gaming. What setup should I go for that would give me excellent sound quality for gaming and music and still give me the ability to tweak the audio like the mixamp? Should I get a amp or a better soundcard or what? What headphones would be the best? Any mic recommendations while we are at it?

I dun game much but a poor man's set up would perhaps be a X-Fi/Xonar DG sound card and JVC RX-700 cans? I own those cans and considering the price it definitely punches way above it's weight class hehe With more demanding cans later you could always add a desktop headphone amp like the Fiio E9, etc into the chain
