This N00B is getting the Sennheiser 598s and has questions,....pleas help.

I mostly listen to music on my Iphone4 and I plan on getting the 598s for xmas, and i have a few questions.

First of all, I am getting these to listen to one band and that is phish.  They are a live band so all their recordings are live shows.  There sound is a jazz/rock/funk/jam conglomerate  with a lot of guitar, piano, and bass solos and there are not many lyrics so vocals are not too important.  There are also a lot of breakdowns which are heavy in instrument interplay and improvisation.  I will link some examples.

Question A: Are open-ear headphones good for soundboard recordings of live concerts?  Or should i bee looking for closed-ear?  I am not worried about sound linkage because these obviously will be for home.

Question B: I primarily use an iphone4 to listen to phish, do i need to use DAC? If DAC is not needed should i get an AMP? Or would it be best just to get a combo like the fiio E7 or E10?

I am sure i will think of more questions.

Thank in advance for the help, this is my first thread here.  I have a pair of those $100 in-ear bose head phones but i am looking for something for at home when i listen to some serious phish.

here are some jams, how would these sound with a 598+E7?

If you have use iphone you can get a line-out-device.  I think it would sound better to hook a dac up to a computer though.

HD598s have a good soundstage, and that should be nice for live recordings as it sounds like your there sort of.

thank you so much, so I should probably get a dac for computer use.  should I get an amp for when listening with an iPhone 4?

so are open ear better for live recordings?

Amp will help, but they are easy to drive.

when u day they are easy to drive, do u mean the iPhone can power the 598s?

I would say open ear headphones are better for live recordings.  Anything with instruments spaced apart, or sounds (like ambient electronic) gets preserved better on open headphones.

The HD598s don't need that match amping, but a better source (DAC) would make them sound better.

What is your budger for dac/amp?

The HD598 are good headphones and coming from the Bose you should be satisfied. Sound quality would improve with a DAC and amp. But I would suggest getting the headphones first, and seeing if that is good enough for you. A halfway decent DAC and amp cost more than the headphones do. That's one of the strange things in this game - the headphones are almost always the cheapest part of your setup. So just try out the phones first, and if the sound is not good enough for you, upgrade to entry level stuff like the Fiio, Music Streamer, or something like that. I wouldn't recommend listening from your iphone though ... if you are gonna be stationary at home anyway, use your computer's headphone jack. Most soundcards have a more powerful amplifier than a mobile phone. And always use lossless files. That's the biggest difference you can make, upgrading from mp3s to lossless.
