Marantz SE-1/EE-1 not working... any idea on how to repair them?

A random e-bay search for something else noticed a set of Marantz SE-1 electrostatic headphones.  I put in the minimum bid and got them.

No energizer, though, and they aren't compatible with my SRD-7.

So, an e-bay search and some more minimum bids, I found the Marantz EE-1 energizer.

Yay!

I took a bit of time, and got my Marantz tuner working properly - it is amazing what contact cleaner will do for these old stereos - and hooked the EE-1 up. Plugged the SE-1 in and... no sound.

Fiddling with it, if I turn it up really, really loud, there's a little sound.  It's tinny, scratchy, and quiet.  Both drivers seem to have the same problem.

Information on these seems scarce.

Anyone have any pointers on what might get them singing again, or how to diagnose if its a headphone or an energizer problem?

Not sure they're worth a lot of work - I have a working SR-X Mark 3 - and I should spend my project time working on other things.

If the energizer plugs in to the wall then leave it on with the cans plugged into it for a bit ,without tunes, maybe a few hours, then slowly turn up the volume to see if anything has improved.. If they have been sitting for ages maybe that will help. I hear some of those older cans need a bit of a chargeup/warmup. Who knows how long they had been sitting especially when they had no energizer with the sale..

If they run directly off the speaker terminals with no wall plug then do the same with the amp on for a bit. ( Is the speaker selector on the amp on? Everything else is correct too? )I made the mistake of forgetting I unplugged the SRD-6 once and thought my cans were toast.

If that is no good you could carefully look inside the energizer don't touch anything just see if anything looks bad.( of course remember to unplug it!)

That's what I would do anyhow. You probably knew all of that anyhow.

 Anybody else have a suggestion?

I really should have thought of that.  I got similar advice for the SR-X Mark 3 when it came, but it didn't need it, and worked right out of the box.

I left the EE-1 energizer on all day, with nothing routed through it.  That's easy to do since it's on the "remote" speaker set, and I can just push the button to turn them off.

This evening, I pushed that button, and got music from both sides.  Quiet, quiet music, but music.  A little channel imbalance.

When I turned the volume up, the channels balanced out and I started getting clear electrostatic sound.  I am so not used to running the 2220 past ten o'clock - these are at about one o'clock - but they're very clear there.

Yay!  Thanks for the good suggestion.

They're a little different than the SR-X, but they're closed which might explain it.

They also have a really high clamping force, probably to get a good seal.

Interesting!

I will leave them on another day and see if they smooth out at all.  I may take them to my local shop and see if they need attention, anyway.

Thanks again!
