DAC/Amp that would sound great with my hd650s, at or under $300

To be clear I want an all in one DAC/amp. NOT two seperate devices. I do not have a problem with buying used. So far I have been looking at the Yulong D100 and some audiogd models.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Could try Mini-i DAC as well. You can get one for around 300 if you catch the sale at tamaudio.

Although from my own experience I think 650 deserves better equipments, and you would do better to build a full system with dedicated source/DAC+amp.

Could you give me some names of good dedicated source/dac+amp combinations for around $450 then? Thanks!

DAC $180 - Audinst HUD-MX1
Amp $240 - Schiit Asgard

This thread reviews both the Audinst and Schiit through the HD650's.

Seems like a killer setup. Just wondering, do you personally own this setup? Thanks for the great suggestion!

I have the Audinst and the Asgard, but not the HD 650's. I plan on upgrading to the 650's when I feel the time is right.

Great, I like it better when I get suggestions from people who actually have the hardware they are suggesting. Thanks again, I will almost definitely be purchasing this setup as soon as I can!

Yes, I like that too; it puts more assurance into the decision, and in turn, makes you feel better about it.

Good luck with the set up, I hope you get the same enjoyment as I have!

Maverick A1 or a Nuforce HDP used, HDP is quite bright and will balance the sound on the HD650 a bit.

How does the amp / dac setup mentioned here compare to a PreSonus central station?

Okay, I haven't posted here in years but I have been browsing since I just made my first headphone purchase in quite a while.

I have 650s and a Benchmark Dac1, first generation, bought in 2003ish. I couldn't be happier. It looks like you can score a Dac1 close to your budget, used but it would be first gen and no USB which may be a deal breaker.

Is the Dac1 a DAC/amp? Otherwise I would be spending too much on a DAC alone. I need to keep it under $450 for the dac and amp.

The Dac1 is a Dac + preamp + dual output (not balanced, two individual outputs) headphone amp. The headphone amp section was voiced for the 650. If you can track down the Stereophile review of the Dac1 I believe Atkinson performed it and mentioned listening to it specifically with the 650.

I wasn't aware the DAC1 was "voiced" for anything but a neutral signal.

It's a very good piece of equipment. It's similar to the Yulong D100 you were considering, with better build quality.
