PC gaming : DT770 / DT990 / or HD598 . asus D2 needed or DSS? and what's blutak mod ?

Hi all !

It's my first post/thread, i'm excited. I've read this forum a lot, looking for answer, since maybe 3 months lol... But I'm more confused than ever jecklinsmile.gif

Read a lot of contradiction about headphone for gaming. wanted to ask in the thread but usually they was outdated... So I create mine.

I come with a shortlist of headphone :

Beyer DT770 who came out a lot of discussion but who has a lot of cons apparently.

Beyer DT990 because in my country is at the same price than the one above.

Sennheiser HD598 because the HD555 is good from what I read for gaming, and the 598 is suppose to be an improve.

For what I'm looking for :

I'm not sure to want a lot of bass, I read than there was a lot with the DT770. But bass is needed for gaming. I'm afraid there is a lack of bass with the 598 no ?

I'm not a fan of closed can.

I own a Monsters studio beats and I don't use it because is killing my ears... also I don't find the bass to be overwhelming with this headphone. Maybe a clue for you to help me choose ^^.

I read in this forum someone talking about a mod for the DT770 who balance more his sound.

The "blutak mod" but I wasn't able to find any more info about this mod...

Quote:
That is stock. After doing the blu-tak mod, the differences become smaller. I would actually say the 770s are better. There's more detail and the bass is better once you tame it. The 770s seem to have a bit more forward sound. Both benefit from it, although I would say the 770s much moreso (since you can tame the bass and keep it from overpowering the midrange). It is an easy to do and cheap in cost mod that really makes a pretty nice difference (makes them both better overall). Its also completely reversible, so if for some reason you don't like the sound you can revert back to normal.

And now if you read as far, what about a sound card ?

I listen to all kind of music, especially Electronic (modselektor, gesaffelstein etc...), Rap, rock/indie rock.

Through my search the Asus D2 pop out. Is it a good investment for gaming and music ?

Or I read some transcending review about the turtle beach DSS. An amp only for gaming. But the sound card is useless with that gadget no ?

Not sure if it's really an improvent if I bought a  good combo headphone/sound card ?

Thanks you !

Hope you understand me, english is not my first langage.
And I hope you will be helpful :)

Thanks.

Sennheiser HD598 or Audio Technica AD900 ~ the AD900 is not very bass heavy for it is excellent for spatial

referencing in gaming, eg, hearing enemies here and there. It's a good improvement over the AD700 which is

more or less one of the most popular gaming headphones.

HD598 is no bass monster either but I think it should be adequate for gaming.

Sound-card wise ~ See if you can get an ASUS Essence ST or STX ~ they're an excellent sound card

and should drive either of those headphones very well, you can even swap different op-amp chips in

the future which fine tunes the sound. Recommended.

Auzentech Bravura is also a very good card.

Hi,

first answer and you already want to blow my budget :D

I read a lot of good stuff about AD900 but unfortunately in europe is hard to find it under 350$

In opposite, the three others above are sell at 200$ish !!

It's seems to be a too pricee in front of the small sound difference no ?

Same for the STX is overpriced for my budget ^^ (350-400$ total), expect if it's a really big improvement in comparaison with the D2X ?

The Auzentech bravura is in the same range of price than the D2X. I will investigate on her.

Thanks for your answer and proposal :)

Just get a DG, you really don't need a D2, the DG also has a built in headphone amp that is pretty useful. Save your money get a DG, you won't be able to hear the difference, I use it with my AH-D2000, it's pretty effing beautiful sounding. Also Dolby Headphone is GOLD! Works great in games and movies.
