I am looking to expand my CIEM arsenal. I am looking for something comparable to the JH16, and it seems like the 8.A would be a good match. Also it looks like there building quality is top notch. I have re-read this thread a few times, and if I am interpreting the post correctly I think the 8.A is what I am probably looking for.

From talking to Dr. Moulton about his design, the 8.A should be even more bass-capable than the JH16. That's my conclusion. He was very nice and we discussed the idea of using a quad bass driver design (as he himself does elsewhere in his line), but here with the 8.A he uses two large sized balanced armatures and then takes further steps to make sure they are not only very powerful, but very well controlled. I'm looking forward to hearing them myself.

Okay, will wait for more impressions.smile.gif

By the way, what is the color of your 8.A? Is it Wine Red? Looks very nice...

EDIT - I was wrong, mine is a Wine Red. It isn't on the order form yet but apparently it is one of Dr. Moulton's favorite colors, so it will probably end up on the order form soon. Like most custom IEM companies, they can basically make any color you want.... So there really isn't room to show every possibility on the order form.

Well, I requested the amber-ish woodlooking colour that is featured on alot of the photographs from the timber line. Apparently, that one was no longer available, so there's definitely some limitations when it comes to the colour. Loads of great other alternatives for me though, so it was not that big a deal.

What's the best method for contacting Dr. Moulton. I wanted to ask the source some questions before I order.

heres his contact page. He's very quick in responding.

yes can confirm that dr moulton is very quick replying to any enquiries. i was expecting to wait a couple of days and he replied within a few hours!

really want to get a pair of 8.a's but waiting for my acs's to arrive first and also a little worried about fit of acrylic ciem's after speaking to one of the acs agents doing molds. i'll probably take the plunge anyway after project86's write up! but will wait until after the new year. would anyone like to recommend any audiologists in london(u.k)?

What's there to worry about?

I'm assuming you purchased the T1 in silicon? A friend just did that. It was like having rubber in the ears.

I think silicon and acrylic have different sounds as well.

I should meet up with you London-ers next time I'm down. Which is every other year. =)

yes the T1's are silicone and i have never had ciem's before so the main worry would be how good the fit is and how comfortable they would be comparing silicon and hard acrylic. obviously not worried enough to put me off getting a pair! its just that the audiologist/agent i spoke to said she didn't want to do the impressions because they would need to be taken open jaw and they would be difficult to get right. i should mention that she works as an agent for acs so maybe should have expected the refusal :(

I recently had some impressions made at Harley Street Hearing for UM Merlins (still waiting for them). They did open mouth impressions using a bite block.

They are a bit more expensive than your local Boots Hearing Centre, but if you are spending that much on customs it's worth getting it done right. Saying that, I did get the moulds for my ACS T1 done at a Boots and they turned out fine, but I didn't want to risk dealing with the hassle of re-fits when UM are based in China.

I have both acrylic and silicone and the comfort is as good or better with the acrylic.
Also, ear impressions using a bite block with an open, relaxed jaw are better regardless of acrylic or silicone. They both need the best earmolds.

thanks for that shamrock. i'll give them a call. having musicians in the web address inspires a bit of confidence ;p

i had impressions for the T1's taken by an acs agent who sent them off for me. however after receiving an email saying they would be ready on the 16th, i have now been told they will be ready anytime up to new year. fortunately i'm quite patient and have an excuse to buy other toys to keep me occupied!

i would have thought that's the case but the agent i called didn't want to do open jaw impressions. my own impressions for the T1's were closed jaw. you've got me worried now!!!

X2.

I just got my first pair of silicone customs after having only ever used acrylic. The difference is not really that big. Silicone may have a small advantage with isolation, in exchange for being a little more difficult to insert or remove. But that's about it.
