I am considering the Heir Audio 6A or the UM Merlin. How do the Merlin and 6A differ in their sound characteristics? I am aware that the Merlin is noted for its bass response, what about the 6A? I listen to genres such as vocals, classical, rock, prog metal. Currently using a Westone W3.
The difference in price is $100, and Heir Audio offers more customization options for the shell, which I think I would not need, though the PCB option is interesting.

I've heard cases of the Merlin customs sounding slightly different from the universals cause of the fit, not sure how true it is and I personally like the way the Merlin universal sounds but I went with the 8A instead based on its sound signature and some slight similarities to the Merlin.
Though I'm not sure how the 6A sounds compared to the 8A since I doubt anyone here owns a 6A as of yet.

Yep, like the above post, the Merlin is likely to sound more like the 8.A than anything else. Look on the several Heir Audio threads for impressions on the 8.A and the comparisons between it and the Merlin.
The 6.A (I don't have it, I ordered the 4.A) is more of a Miracle competitor. It is designed to be accurate, but slightly bassier than the reference-neutral 4.A. As mentioned before, only one 6.A has been delivered, and that customer is likely not a regular contributor to the Heir Audio threads, as we've not heard anything about anyone with a 6.A around town.
Consider also, however, that the Merlin is vented, and thus will not isolate as well, if you're concerned about that. There are lots of members who have posted their impressions on the Merlin; you should go through those thoughts as well.
Just received my 8.A from Heir Audio. I chose the dark smoke shell and black small weave carbon fiber look. I have to say I am very very impressed with the build quality and the small weave carbon fiber, they are so stunning in real life! As this is my first CIEM, I was very worried about the fit, turns out the Wizard really does have magical powers, the 8A fits into my ear like a glove and is very comfortable (more comfortable than my UM3X with shure olives!)
Initial Sound Impression: I am listening to the 8A through my Cowon J3 (maybe not the best gear), after going through a bunch of my music, from pop, hip hop, classical , ballads , to me they sounded very similar to the LCD2 Rev2 that i had. Music sounded very smooth, spacious , bass is accurate and the soundstage sounded just right for different music. What surprised me was that the 8.A totally changed my impression of IEMs, I thought they will all be "in the head sounding", however with the 8.A and craftsmanship of the Wizard, it sounds surprisingly very open and spacious, exactly what I needed.
Pure black carbon fiber faceplates are still the tuxedo of CIEMs.
Very nice! Clean and sleek! I was considering the same setup, but I wanted to have the Heir logo in matte black inserted as well; I guess the Wizard didn't have that sort of material, so I opted to go instead for the blue CF a la Sinocelt. I still haven't received mine ---- so many people putting in rush orders and getting them ahead of me!
Look fantastic!
Wow, love the black CF look! Very sleek.
mine are somewhere in london hopefully on a ups van! but i have to go to work now
Guys, does any of you have ear piercings? cause i have one and I'm afraid that in order to get a heir audio iem i would have to take it out..
someone manages to put the iem inside without it touching his piercings? ( i have a daith..)
Mine are also on a UPS van, but probably still in China
I must say, dealing with the Wizard continues to be a pleasure.
I had to send my 8.A and a reshell back for a refit. Mostly, it was my own fault for using dodgy impressions I obtained from JH. I assume they had created a model from the old molds they had lying around from my JH16s. Back when the Wizard received them, he told me they were like nothing he had seen before, and he had to spend alot of time smoothing them out. Due to this, I kinda expected I would have to pay some kind of fee for a refit, seen as how I had used poor impressions but that wasn't the case.
The Wizard was really cool about me sending them back and e-mailed me as soon as they had arrived. I sent my JH16 along with the 2 Heir CIEMs in order for the JH16 to be used as a model. I was worried about having to be without CIEMs for a substantial amount of time, given the amount of orders Heir is currently experiencing and I found this troublesome as I have 1 cable here and another one incoming that I need to test. Once again the Wizard showed just how excellent Heir's customer service is, and offered to make a cast from the JH16's and have them sent back to me, so that I can get on with my life
.
I must say, unlike JH who we're hard to get a response from ever since they received my payment, the Wizard has been consistenly answering my e-mails within the day and usually much faster - even at odd hours. Not only is this very reassuring as a customer but also quite impressive considering just how busy the Wizard is even without having to answer all kinds of questions via e-mail. What a great guy.
My guess is that a daith would likely get in the way of a custom, as the custom is going to fill most of the ear. At the very least it could rub against it and cause discomfort or noise. At the worst it could actually damage the custom. I'd remove it if I were you before inserting the custom.
would you consider trying putting another piercing? like a banana with a flat exit?
I guess I'll just have to say it goodbye ;(
do you believe a Rook will get in the way as well?
