Trying to decide whether to get the AKG Q701s..

I've read and watched a lot of reviews on these headphones. I liked everything described about them, and it seems they'd be right for me. However, it is always mentioned that these headphones are terrible for metal, hard rock, hip hop, etc. I'm not exactly sure in what way they mean. I presume it is because that they have little to no impact and bass? I don't really care about that; I don't enjoy metal the same way most people do.

If I'm a person who likes the idea of balanced/neutral sounding headphones, is a metal head, but also doesn't care about any sort of experience of the music, would these be right for me?

It seems the Grado SR325is are supposed to best for the type of music I listen to, but these I have to order online, while the Q701s are available at a local store.

Stay away form upper end Grado headphones.  They are terribly uncomfortable.

I suggest either the Q701 or the DT990 ( 32 Ohm ).  Both are amazing headphones and both I have spent many hours with.  They will be great for you.  The DT990 has better bass reproduction.  See the following charts:

http://graphs.headphone.com/graphCompare.php?graphType=0&graphID[]=2931&graphID[]=2141

Honestly the Q701 is the best headphone I have heard for percussion.  They do amazingly well there, but the DT990 has a more fun sounding signature which is why I ended up keeping the DT990 over the Q701.

If you are looking for something more portable try the V-Moda M80 or V80.  Both have very similar sound signatures and are the best in class for the $200 and under category.

If you can get the Q701 locally, do it, but you'll need a decent amplifier (an AV receiver could do too if you don't have a dedicated headphone amp). Make sure you can return it too. So just buy it and try it out. Take it back if it doesn't suit you.

Very best,

The Q701 is an outstanding phone in every way ,but needs some eq to add some mid bass to sound right with rock music and any kind of music that needs some bass hitting power , it has very nice sub bass by the way , just lacks mid / upper bass for rock music etc.

Would the headphone amp built into the Asus Xonar Essence STX be sufficient?

Yes. More than enough to power them. If you want neutral, any AKG 70x will do ya.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll get them, then.

I'm coming to these from the DT770s (pro, 250ohms version) because I'm getting tired of the muddiness, and they make me feel like I'm listening to music (imagine music as being white; a blank slate by default) that is being colored by the headphones. They also have a lot of bass, which can be fun, but it feels like I'm missing a lot out of my music because of that.

Regardless of my distaste for the 'style' of the DT770s, I've been worrying about whether going to the AKG Q701s is a meaningful upgrade (in a general way). Disregarding the specifics of how they sound, I'm thinking in regards to the sound quality in a more objective way; whether the difference there is meaningful (enough to justify the price). It makes me worried when I see the DT770s in the same line up as the AKG Q701s. It's starting to seem like someone's personal taste (how they want their music to sound like) is the only thing that matters between these headphones. I was hoping the AKG Q701s being $200 more would mean they are better overall (disregarding personal taste), but it seems like that was a naive hope and is not the case.

Some people might have trouble seeing how I can possibly consider objectivity to be a factor in something like this. It's easier if you imagine the difference between a $20 pair of cheap headphones and any high end pair of headphones. That is the kind of objectivity I am talking about.

Well, local stores can be like that. Are you looking at Amazon USA? Prices in general are much higher in Canada. The lowest I can find from a seller on Amazon.ca for the AKG Q701s is $329 CDN. I don't know of many online sellers that ship to Canada where I might find a better price.

Taking into account the cost of shipping, I'd save about $67 if I ordered online compared to buying it locally ($399 local). The DT770 250ohms are $179 local.
