Dorm room : HD800 vs Adam A7X?

Here we go :D

I'm in my university's dorm room and my (beloved) HD800 headphones have been barely used few hours during the past 3 months. Instead, I'm listening to to my Audioengine A2 several hours a day : speakers have become apparently so much more convenient in my situation.

I'm now contemplating trading my HD800 and A2's for a fairly high end pair of monitors. After some extensive researches, it looks like the Adam A7X might be the best option in my case because it's supposed to : 1. perform particularly well with classical music (yay!) and 2. perform well in near-field setups (I'll be about 30 centimeters / a feet from my monitors).

I'm wondering if the above assumptions are true and how will the A7X compare to the HD800 in a tiny, poorly insulated place such as a dorm room? Will I miss my headphones?! Finally, were could I get these (preferably second-hand)? Looks like it turns around $1.5K for a new pair, in Canada...

Thanks!

I would suggest checking out the Event Opal monitors if you're considering the high-end stuff. They sound absolutely fantastic. Another option if you're spending that kind of money is a desktop sized amplifier, and a regular pair of speakers.

Alternatively you can get very decent SQ for the $$ with a separate TK2050 T-amp and a nice pair of bookshelf speakers maybe tongue_smile.gif

I was in a similar situation earlier last year, and I'm also in Canada; however, reported build quality issues with the A7 turned me away from them.  Plus, it's hard to get a pair at a reasonable price in Canada -- always check out Gearslutz to see if you can pick up a pair secondhand.

I eventually went with a pair of Dynaudio BM5As which I managed to get for $550 USD shipped from Hawaii to Washington, and then I just drove down and picked them up myself.  Absolutely love em!

Have you considered a pair of KRK's?

They are a steal for their price..

Very crystal and clean sound..

The RP6 will suit you well if you are planning to keep them and take them back home when you graduate...
