What are your dream headpones?

What headphones have you always wanted? Or maybe, you recently heard about them and you instantly became in love with them?

I do have some different ones I am wondering about. The T1s and the AKG k550s. It is always fun to try new products.

Sony CD-3000

The AKG K-1000 was an object of fascination for awhile.  I held off buying until they were discontinued and then I impulsively bought one of the last new pairs.  It was worth it.

Then I thought the HD-800 was overpriced and not worth it.  Then I heard one and had to have it.  The HD-800 ended my headphone collection.

Though Sennheiser has a new pair coming.  Who knows what it is?  Maybe it will be my next object of lust.

In spite all the phones in my sig, the best I've heard is the Senn Orpheus.

Maybe if i sell my collection, i could afford one........

Dream? A headphone I can be completely satisfied with.

Reality: Probably the LCD 3.

STAX SR-009

LCD 3 is obtainable a STAX SR-009 with a decent amping, Sadly I have to sell my kids for those.

Unfortunately, I agree.

There are plenty of TOTL phones I haven't heard and would like to, like the R10, HE-90 (still kicking myself for not trying 'em when I had the chance), LCD-3, Qualia, top-end Grados, and other usual suspects. Without hearing them first, though, while I know they're great by reputation I have no idea whether I'd love 'em personally. For example, some folks think the T1 is phenomenal but as good as it sounds it kind of leaves me cold. I have some idle curiosity in the Ultrasone Edition 8, which have a reputation as excellent-sounding closed cans (short of the R-10), a particular genre of phone that I wish more high-end manufacturers would try tackling.

Of the ones I've heard and wish I had, in no particular order they'd be the HE-6, SR-009, bass-heavy K1000, HD 800 and LCD-2. Four of these are still in production, one of which has been superseded by a better model already. It's a good time to be a headphone listener; great gear is always expensive but some of the best stuff is still being made, accessible, continually improving and well-supported. Even if purchasing one of these requires careful budgeting of rainy-day funds (which is the case for most of us), they're safer purchases to make than many things in audio-land. I feel lucky to have the HE-6 already and don't feel motivated to make a lot of effort to add more phones, especially since doing so would require more electronics purchases to support them. But I can dream.

I don't have a dream phone just a theoretical upgrade, which would be the Stax 009, properly amplified. A Successor to the Senn HD800 is automatically and alone on my "to buy list", provided it is compatible with whatever current system for the 800 might be.
