For female vocals and jpop, I'd say Audio-Technica's AD900 would be a better choice than the AD700.  Honorable mentions include:

AKG K601

Grado PS500, HF2

Sennheiser HD600

Shure SRH940

all of which(except the HF2) are available on Amazon.

For possible amps I'd look at dac and amp combo units like Fiio's E7/E9, Matrix Cube & Mini-i and Audio GD NFB-12.

At $1000, I truly think the best combo would be a pair of AD2000 with a decent Dac and amp. It might go over $1000 but AD2000 is totally worth it.

For Jpop, I think HD600 can be too smooth and not exciting enough. But SRH940, Grados are surely exciting to listen, I would also add DT880 to the list to consider over the HD600.

Ra97oR has a good point - the AD2000 is voiced to work best with JPOP, and it would also be my choice. I didn't use it with an amp with it; it already has a strident, full sound. An amp would only optimize the sound.

Very best,

To me, AD2000 wasn't anything special for female vocals or Jpop. Still good, but I preferred my HD-650 with a specific amp for them.

All my headphones are great for Jpop to me. Here's a few of my favorites not in order:

HD-598 (near perfect for vocals and Jpop)

K501 (traded it away when I got the Q701, which I prefer)

K601

Q701 (with a very good amp such as M-Stage or Micro Amp. I don't suggest the K702 for vocals)

SA3000

Grado SR-225i

AKG K400 (better than any other AKG for Jpop and female vocals IMO. I've found it's mids very forward though..could be my DAC. Needs K601 pads)

SRH-940 is also quite good.

My favorites for Jpop with female vocals are the Koss Pro DJ 100 and HD-598. SR-225i is pretty impressive for this, but I haven't owned it long enough.

DJ100 is a bit hard to get it sounding great and needs specific portable amps and M50 pads.

AD900 is on my list to try since I miss the AD2000 a lot.

BTW I've found AD300 to be much better for Jpop than the AD700. It has much more forward mids, more bass and a fuller sound. Less treble too.

Hate the AD700 for Jpop.

The old W1000 is supposed to be good too, but I've never heard it. How is the W1000X with Jpop? I'm worried a bit about it's bass.

I think those two will be good enough to start with.
