iBasso DX100 Reference DAP - ES9018 inside - Page 160

You have a point but we'll have to see comparisons to come to that conclusion. I can't even say my Studio V comes close to the sound quality of the DX100 although it is very, very good. And the Studio V $hits all over the iphone4 in every aspect. So you get the picture lol.

At least for the brief 30 mins I played around with 4 different Z series through my Ultrasone Ed8LE, I felt they sounded better than my iPhone 4S+Pico Slim. I'm tempted to go back again soon to compare the the Z series against my 4S+Go-DAP 4.0 (DAC/Amp) and 4S+CLAS/SR-71B.

lee730, although I agree with you that the Z1070 is targeted to the greater customers, I'm personally cautious about generalisations of what tech goes into the Z1070. Sony's not divulged what drives the Z1070's audio.

P.S. I'm not expecting the Z1070 to outdo the DX100 but at the same time if the Z1070 SQ comes close to the DX100, then the price difference may be worthy to take advantage of. At least in my case, where I have an easy-to-drive Ed8 headphones. If I had a hard-to-drive headphones, that may be a different matter.

I'm really debating between the DX100 and Walkman Z at the moment; the Walkman Z's technical specifications (non audio) destroy the DX100.

Web browsing is typical android web browsing on the DX100.  It's not going to replace an iPhone but it works in a pinch.  I'm sure you can get other browser software too via the market.  The Walkman I'm sure is faster.  But it's a dollar store special compared to the hardware inside the DX100, from what I know about the Z.  I don't know first hand but the Z wasn't designed with the same intentions as the DX100.  Also I don't think the Sony supports digital coax/optical out nor can it have a line out without a special dock cable, and I don't think it can do flac/alac without aftermarket software which defeats the purpose of the flashy Sony UI.

The Wi-Fi works great and the OS does include the full Android Market. To prolong battery life, one can go into the Settings/Application menu and kill the player process so it is not running in the background while using other functions of the DX100. The player will once again become active either by selecting it from the homepage or by a reboot. Hopefully, iBasso will incorporate an easier means of preventing the player from always running in the background in an upcoming firmware revision. Nearly all of the reported issues will have been addressed prior to the next round of orders.

iBasso has every intention for the DX100 to fully meet its design parameters.

EDIT: iBasso stated to me that the DX100 was designed to enter a sleep mode shortly after pausing the player turning off the screen, either by momentarily pressing the power button or by letting the screen time out. When in the sleep mode, the DX100 will draw very little power.

I tried this several times by following their instructions; pausing the player and then turning off the screen. After one full day, starting with a full battery, the battery icon still indicated full, so there is no need to manually kill the player process. The standby (sleep) mode works exactly as described by iBasso.

End of the day, how many of us have the financial resources to buy every 'killer' DAP and compare it with every other killer DAP ? Even the reviewers often have to rely on their aural memory when doing comparisons, as many will not have a DAP like the X1060 on hand when they review the Z series. I already have rose-colored earpieces when I think of my old Sony  ;)

Just for a lark, I tried using my DX100 to power my HE-6 phones, which normally I drive from the speaker terminals of a 60 wpc desktop amp. The DX100, surprising, drives them very well on high gain. Volume setting is about 230-240 which provides the level that I usually use when listening to my HE-6. Frequency balance, bass extension and control is not lacking in any way.

Call me very surprised, but the DX100 clearly outputs more power than expected in order to handle the HE-6 without apparent strain!

EDIT: I tried a 24/192 file through the HE-6 and the DX100 makes no apologies whatsoever. It is the first "portable" player that I have heard that does justice to the HE-6.

What phones would you compare the HE6 to? LCD2/LCD3, HD800 et all? What is its sound signature. Eventually I wanna get one full size can to end it all at least in that segment. I am of course a sucker for detail, large and full sound stage. I also like my sound to not be very fatiguing while still being very fun and detailed.

I don't want to hijack the thread, but I haven't owned or heard the LCDx and only briefly heard the HD800 which I didn't much care for. IMO, the HE-6 is the best large headphone I have owned. Just ahead of my K1000 (which the DX100 also drives very well). The HE-6, although less efficient than the K1000 is nonetheless an easier phone for the DX100 to drive as it is a constant 50 ohm purely resistive load while the K1000 is a much higher impedance phone.

Thanks. I'll keep the HE6 in my potential "to own list" :)...

I have been listening to a variety of music with the DX100/HE6 combo for the last few hours and so far it has handled everything with aplomp. No distortion or clipping. Clearly a much heftier amp section than previous iBasso portables. They did say that there were 10 large electrolytic caps inside, hence the turn on and off pop.

IMO, there seems to be little need to add an external amp unless it is a large desktop.

The DAC section is just another major plus on the DX100 and it eats up the DAC in the Sony for sure. But it is an expensive player so YMWV. I for one don't regret getting this player and I am the one who got the defective unit lol (go figure this would be number 4 audiophile DAP DOA ;).

Guys, will someone compare the battery with and without an SD in the player. Sure you have to play the songs form the MicroSD !

I used the micro SD card but not very much since there is so much room on board lol.

Well as soon as Li receives my package he will notify me. I shipped it via EMS so hopefully by next week. I left it filled with 46 GB of FLAC music as a gift :).
