2.0 passive speakers

So I'm looking to put together a 2.0/2.1 system. I plan on driving it with an amp so I think I need passive speakers. Not too worried if the speakers push a lot of bass, I can always add a sub of needed. Obviously, it needs to sound great, and it needs to fill a room so directional speakers are out. Budget is about 500 just for the speakers. Suggestions?

Hmm if u have the space i would sink a wee bit on strong fronts regardless if u have plans to expand to 5.1 later and go with some solid floor standers?

No plans to 5.1. I don't think ill need that for my computer. Stands are a good idea, should decide on speakers first though

Paradigm makes some very nice and high value speakers.

I have heard the Axiom speakers lately and they sound great for lower prices.

If you can find a place to listen to different brands, that would be a great idea.

Not sure how much they cost in Canada but the Monitor Audio BX2s go for 250 pounds in the UK and those could be an option for bookshelf speakers if available perhaps?

I am very happy with my setup of some Wharfedale Diamond 9.1.

They are very affordable and does not require to much amping.

It's a warm recommendation if you are looking for something under the £200 mark.

Although, I am not sure if you can buy them in Canada :p

Edit:

You can also spice up the bass segment with the Diamond SW150.

Pairs nicely with the 9.1s if you are into bit of a slam.

Yes, actually it turns.out there are both wharfdale and monitor audio dealers locally so I should be able to give both a listen as well
