$$$ coming soon. Help a noobie on starting out!

Hey guys!

I'm Bolun but you can call me rice =)

Please take some time to read through and give me some advice/input and help me onto the path to learning more about all this stuff.

I've always been very sensitive about sound.  My ears are sort of picky when it comes to music, and I'm glad I found other people like me haha.

I've played violin for 13 years and am a music major for performance.

So music-wise I will be listening to mostly classical with a little rock/alternative here and there too.

But I also play Counter-Strike competitively/professionally.  So good directional sound is important too, but not the most important, and I have no idea what specs to even look for in this category.

Priority #1 is for listening to music.

Basically the most important qualities I prefer when listening to music are purity, spaciousness, color, and texture.

Long story short, I play this game called runescape and I've gotten really bored of it.  Haven't touched it in half a year.  So i'm selling all the cash I have on that account and I can get almost $2000 for it.

A little over a grand is going towards a new computer.

So I will have around 800-900 to spend on a good sound setup.

I would like to be able to plug my headphones into my computer somehow.  I don't want an entirely separate setup from my PC.

I do not know if I should just get the Asus ST soundcard or maybe the asus essence one external amp thing.

That thing looks sweet, but its around $550.

Open to any suggestions.

Maybe a $200 sound card and $500 headphones.  Or maybe the Essence One + a pair of $200-300 headphones.

Again, I know very little, so any input would be great.

I'm using a pair of HD 555's right now on an old $50 sound card(pretty much onboard sound), and at the beginning they were great, but now they are boring to me and i'm constantly wanting more color and texture out of them.  (i have the 50 ohms version)

Sorry if this post is disorganized.  I'm cramming for an Econ test right now and my head is scattered =P

Thanks everyone!

At the moment, I'm considering the Asus Xonar ST card with AKG K701's

The Asus Xonar Essence STX is cheaper and more future proof, it's PCI-Express, the ST is PCI.

The Essence STX & ST come with a headphone amplifier rated up to 600-Ohms

The Essence STX with 3 upgraded op-amps (operational amplifiers) might improve the sound of the HD-555 enough

that you can hold off from buying new headphones.

Nicer headphone will drop in price from Feb to May.

Headphones to go with the Essence if you can't wait.

(Prices on these on on the low side right now)

Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro or Premium 250-Ohm (closed)

Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro 250-Ohm (open)

Heya,

Classical, strings. Check. Soundcard only if possible. Check.

Xonar STX + AKG Q701 (color of your choice).

Alts: AudioTechnica AD900, Sennheiser HD600, Hifiman HE-300, Beyer DT880.

But I would stress... do consider allowing yourself a discreet amplifier. They are rather small. This one will do.

Very best,

People get good stuff for Christmas, and spend money buying good stuff for others on Christmas, so they really do not buy to much "good stuff" right after Christmas.

People starting thinking of paying taxes by April 15th,

figuring out how much money they will have to write a check for the IRS and state taxes (like here in Calif.).

No one wants to spend $500 on headphone or other nice stuff right after giving the IRS a few thousand dollars.

Or people hold off buying until they get their tax rebate check.

So the price on $500 headphone has to drop to $375 to be able to sell them.

Which also drives the prices on $250 headphones, which drives the prices on $150 headphones.

Wholesalers do not want to have left over unsold Christmas product sitting in their wharehouse for months

So they have to drop wholesale prices to clear out the leftover from Christmas.

So all these factors drive down prices from Feb. to May.

Which ones will drop and when is hard to guess.
