Amp for AKG K240 MKII? (NOT PORTABLE)

Hey Head-Fi!

I have a pair of K240 MKII's from AKG and I was wondering if I will get an improvement in sound if I get this:

It uses a Yamaha YDA138 Chip.

If not could anyone recommend a good (NOT PORTABLE) budget amp for my headphones?

The headphones are 55OHMs.

My sound card is the ASUS Xonar DS.

Thanks!

What about upgrading your soundcard to an Essence Stx?

Which would be a better improvement first? Soundcard or Amp?

Im willing to spend 100 bucks or so, something along those lines, but will increase budget if something really stands out.

Hmm, Fiio's E10 seems like a good option for that budget range.  You can find more info on it here.

I've been meaning to ask, will a headphone amp only increase the volume? Or will it definitely increase sound quality?

And will it make any difference if it's USB rather than a jack?

A dedicated headphone amp is not just about volume.  Much like speakers, headphones need a quality electrical signal to sound their best.  A quality amp will provide benefits such as better bass control, impact and extension, better definition of musical details and nuances and sound stage depth and precision.

Ideally you would want an amp that is at least battery powered(preferably wall powered), but there are quality amps like Fiio's E10, that are usb powered.

Alright pretty much got my mind set on the Fiio E10.

Let's say my last resort was http://canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=6_108&item_id=040462 , will it improve sound quality at all?

Hmm, I'm not familiar with that product, but the headphone out(like many integrated amps) looks to be adequate.  Based on those specs it's probably not going offer much improvement, but I could be wrong and that price is enticing.  I'd say that's not a bad back up option.
