My first serious headphones (gaming & music)

Thread Starter

Hi everyone, I'm looking for a good headset/headphones and a sound card mainly for gaming but I'd like to use it for listening to music too.

I play competitively at fps games ( Counter Strike) so I really need a good soundstage and understand where are the enemy

I've read a lot of discussion here and here is what I think might work for me, but I dont know which of these option would be the best:

PC360 + Asus Xonar DX (150+50€)

ATH-AD700 + Asus Xonar DX (100+50€)

ATH-AD700 + Auzentech X-Fi Forte (100+140€)

First of all, what do you think on  Sennheiser PC360 vs AD700?

I think the PC360 is a really good headset but I'm not sure if the DX will be enough for it, if that is the case

would it be cool for the AD700 or I should get the way more expensive X-Fi Forte (triple the price)?

So, what would be the best for me?

There is something else I should consider?

Thanks you and sorry for my bad english.

If you already have a mic like i do, and like BASS which i love (basshead here) but also want sound quality and a great soundstage AND if u DONT have a lot of noise going on, get the http://www.amazon.com/Beyerdynamic-Open-Studio-Headphones-Ohms/dp/B0011UB9CQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1322770015&sr=1-1

it has everything u want, great for music, great soundstage for gaming, quality, extra clarity because its semi open, yet is one of the bassiest phones ever for being open...!!! oh and on top of that, everyone loves em, perfect 5/5 reviews only.

also, ull be ok with the xonar dx, but the asus essence is the favorite of all sound cards here at head-fi.

I'm not really a basshead so I am not looking for a powerfull bass but instead for better mids and highs

I'm going to add another option to the previous one I made:

PC360 + Asus Xonar DX (150+50€)

PC360 + Auzentech X-Fi Forte (140+110€)

ATH-AD700 + Asus Xonar DX (100+50€)

ATH-AD700 + Auzentech X-Fi Forte (100+110€)

What about now?

It's really about the AD700 vs PC360

How important is EAX 3/4/5 support to you, for the games that use them?

If you're mostly playing games with software audio engines (most newer releases), then the toss-up between those two cards boils down to CMSS-3D Headphone vs. Dolby Headphone more than anything. I can't compare them myself, and there's plenty of heated debates on the subject with some preferring one tech, others preferring the other, and still others who like neither and just play in pure stereo. Regardless, it's probably not a difference paying over twice as much for.

By any chance, is the Xonar DG available in your area? It's a mere US$30 here (less after rebates), though I'm not sure what it's like in your area. (Maybe the DX is close enough in price that you might as well step up.)

The AD700 synergizes well with any binaural HRTF surround tech (this includes both CMSS-3D Headphone and Dolby Headphone), and you shouldn't have any issues pinpointing gunshots and footsteps. However, do note that there are people who outright LOATHE the AD700 and see gaming-to be more specific, "competitive foot-step listening" in his words-to be the only thing it's good at and to be utterly overpriced otherwise. These same people are bassheads, and the AD700 is the very antithesis of a basshead can, especially with boosted treble to skew things further from neutral. Their reasoning is that you can take a more balanced can and EQ the bass down if necessary.

As for the PC360...can't help you there, though Mad Lust Envy loves it. I can speak on the AD700 because I owned one for some time and can actually say with certainty that it's what most people say it is instead of guessing based on popular opinion.

Thanks you, unfortunately I'm still very undecided so I'll wait if someone do have something else to say first to make my final choice.

Like i said JUST GET THE http://www.amazon.com/Beyerdynamic-Open-Studio-Headphones-Ohms/dp/B0011UB9CQ/ref=cm_cr_pr_pb_t they are better than the senheisser 595 which are better than the ah700 so ud be skipping a lot into better quality and performance! they arent basshead lvl bass, but i plan to correct that with some equing and amping but nothing that you would have to worry about....EVERYONE LOVES EM 5/5 reviews only, confortable, etc etc, they are just the best option you can get, especially for gaming.

I've read some reviews about them and it seems that people like the Senn/AD700 more.

Anyway I'm going to consider even the HD598 now .

I'm making so many question and so much confusion but I really want a "definitive" headphones wich will last as long as possible.

where in gods name have you seen those reviews? also the pro's will last you more than either since they are far more rugged and studio version

I wouldn't reccommend Beyers for his purposes.  Heavy bass cans are bad for competitive FPS, basically the bass from gunshots/explosions/etc. interfere with the detection of footsteps/discrete sounds.

With that said, since you want to use your headphones for music as well, I'd recommend against the AD700's in particular, they are not musical headphones.  HD598's should be a good choice, better than the 360/700 for your combined use.  My favorite gaming/music headphone is Fischer FA-011 excellent detail/soundtage, good bass and very musical.

If you intend to use it with the Xonar DX, note that I have a Xonar D1 that is essentially the same card with a PCI interface, and measured more than 100 Ohm output impedance on it. When combined with the HD598, this means that the bass response will have a resonant peak of about +6 dB around 90 Hz added to it. This may be a problem if you want to avoid emphasized/boomy bass.

Yeah this might be a problem, It can't be solved with EQ?

Would a Auzentech X-Fi Forte solve this problem?

I find the t50rp better for gaming then my other headphones, your ability to pinpoint sound is better because it has a bigger circle of sound and it sounds like a laid back virtual sound.

Thing is a soundcard won't do the t50rp justice.

AD700s and the DX. Pretty simple really.
