Using full tower speakers as headphones

Got your attention? Good.

Just curious to see what the opinion is on this idea. I have a pair of Rocket 550MKII speakers. Not small by any means. However, the room is a bit tight with them set up in the traditional stereo manner. So I am thinking of setting them up to my left and right side facing each other. See the picture below. I have done this in the past to decent effect but am uncertain if I was correct in doing so. Will this actually work or would I be wasting my time? Thanks!

I have Mirage towers set about 5' away from each ear, to the sides and angled in and they sound great, better than any headphones I have heard.

If you like what you hear then stick with it regardless of "right" or "wrong"

Directly facing each other might get problematic - if they are out of phase, you'll get sound cancellations. In phase, you may get odd conflicts and interference (some destructive).

If possible, I would see if you can still set them slightly in front of you, and angled in (even steeply). Just not facing each other directly.

Why not just get little baby sized speakers which are better suited to a near-field application? Plop them on the desk and have a really good 1 or 1.5m triangle. Using gear that may not be as good optimally is much better (IMO) than using gear that is normally considered to be better poorly.

I am in agreement with that statement. I have them 6 ft away and 6 1/2 ft apart atm. Angled in too. Works fine but dominates the entire room. Makes the room half its actual size.

I am currently fixing a crappy Samsung HTIB with tiny speakers to try just that. I will make a little 5.1 with those and see how that works out.
