Guys, I need Help. Help Me Please. I'm an idiot. LoL

Hello everyone,

I’m glad I found such a good , informative, and non-biased forum like this one. I’ve been ‘lurking’ on this site for quite some time just never posted up until now. I’m looking to buy some new phones but was hoping to get some friendly feedback from the forum if you guy’s don’t mind.

About Me / Preferences

  1. My price range is $100-150 Maximum. I would prefer to purchase the item *in a store* ..not online. So please recommend a retail location that you know of selling such an item.
  2. I live in New York City and we have oldest , crappiest, and most annoying loud subway system. I say that to say this…they *must* be ‘noise cancelling’.
  3. I don’t know the difference between ‘open/closed’ and don’t know how this will affect my purchase.
  4. Hard Bass is a must for me. Just to clarify…I mean clear, crisp ‘THUMP…THUMP…THUMP’ not ‘BOOOOM’…’BOOOOM’…’BOOOOM’ Basically not ‘Rattle-y’.
  5. Music Genres: Hardcore Underground RAP (mostly 160kbps/128kbps because I listen to alot of mixtapes that are released by the artist like that purposely because they are for promo use only and not meant to be CDQuality). I actually prefer listening to the music like this because it gives it that grungy, early 90’s feel to it when RAP music was actually good and you hear a hiss or pop here and there but not to the point it ruins the song. This gives me a feeling like I was originally listening to the cassette tape. The way mix’tapes’ originally were…not on discs!
  • Rhythm & Blues = All of these songs are in FLAC lossless. I’ve been told this is ‘BETTER’ than 320kbps but not sure because I cant tell the difference on my crappy computer speakers. I just hate that it’s twice as large (in size) compared to a .mp3 format song.
  • House / Dub Step = From old school Stevie B > Flux Pavillion. These will all be 192kbps or better.
  • Music with electric guitar, saxxophone. Not heavy metal, not punk, not rock.
  1. I’am open to any suggestions but please do not recommend me anything from Soul (Ludacris) or Beats (Dre). I refuse to support the new ‘cool hipster trend’. I’am not cheap but would rather give a company like SONY my money. Why ? Dre is not a good rapper, great producer although most of his basslines are repetitive. He stole , paid for, does’nt list people in the credits of his albums that really mix and even co-produce some of his beats such as the real ‘g funk’ originator of the style he ran with Warren G (his own cousin) and Dj Quik. I can’t blame him though. His fanbase (the high schoolers buying the overpriced hype being shoved down their throats) is’nt old enough to know he’s the same guy who wore a stethoscope, sequin shirt, lipstick, and eyeliner in the Wrecking Crew album booklet. No thanks. Sorry to break it to you but he’s not a REAL doctor either.
  2. The main purpose of these phones is to be plugged directly into an iPod. I would prefer something with as SHORT of a cord as possible. I don’t care about portability because I wear them around my neck when im not listening to them. I also wear baseball hats and sunglass almost all the time so I need something really ‘cushiony’ with enough flex to it so my ears don’t hurt from squishing my hat > my shades > my ear. I also like to wear them at a 180degree angle sometimes –around the back of my head- so the ‘band/frame’ is not on the top of my head all the time. I do this because the heavy headphones push my hat down. I like to leave a lil room there. I don’t like a ‘snug’ fit band.

Help me out here fellas. I’m so sick of wearing these cheesy earbuds that don’t even fit in my ears properly. The left one labeled with “L” keeps falling out of my ear at random times. I’m starting to bug out and really believe my left ear is bigger than my right ear when its not. Haha.

Thanks

-Benny

Hey there, couple of questions back atcha:

1. Are you sure the headphones must be noise cancelling? As opposed to isolating.

2. Have you tried searching the forums for suggestions, since you've been lurking for so long?

Go to J&R, you can try out all the headphones, see which ones you think sound the best. Nobody is a better judge than yourself. Trying starting out with the Shure SRH440s, or the Sennheiser HD 25 i-ii I really liked these two headphones as starters. Many people recommend the Audio-Technica M-50's while being good for their price range I feel the other two outperformed it easily. The Shure's are passive noise cancelling so they keep out the noise by creating a tight seal yet, don't degrade the sound quality, like beats or bose headphones. Use the search, there are thousands of threads exactly like this, I am sure you will find what you are looking for.

Personally, I don't believe the M50 will be something he wants as it's more BOOM than a thump. I won't recommend the Shure SRH750DJ either, as they suffer from the exact same issue (more thump and boom compared to the M50's is what I've read though.)

As for noise cancelling, you'll want passive, passive, passive. Active typically degrades sound quality and I doubt you'll find many GOOD NC cans for $100-150

Ultrasone HFI-580's are 118 at J&R!

You'll love 'em mang, I guarantee it if those are your preferred music genres

I know you wanted to try them first... but I don't think any stores sell them

If you can, the Senn PX 360 sound right up your alley.  They isolate like beasts, have a short chord, are very easy to drive, and really healthy bass...  surprisingly healthy bass.
