I own the Denon AHD2000, what should my next headphone be?

I got the Denons over a year ago and i love them.

I use an iPhone, and iPod and my PC to listen to a huge variety of music (Rock, Pop, Jazz, Classical etc)

I was thinking of getting a headphone Amp (which would need to be portable) but i have decided that it would be better to improve my headphones.

My budget is 1000 dollars and id love some recommendations!

Thanks in advance for your help from rainy Ireland.

Mark

You like the denon sound signature? you can upgrade to the D5000's or 7000's.

Hey Fabio

Thanks for the recommendation. Unfortunately the 5000 or 7000 wont work with the iPod/iPhone and they cant drive them enough.

True.

I was thinking on a portable amp, but you want a pair of easy to drive headphones. tongue.gif

Upgrading source is important as well.

Would you recommend a portable amp Fabio? I only use lossless (ALAC) files.

I originally tried the 650 and the Denon and really liked both but went with the Denons are the 650 is open (and i would annoy everybody on the train)!

I was used to poor quality headphones at the time so if i tried again i may have a different reaction!

hd650 cannot be driven by ur ipod.

so it is out

I went from an HD555 modded to HD595 to a D2000 and at first, I wasn't too fond of the D2000s.  The Bass and clarity were amazing but they were harsh on the high end and sibilent.  After a few weeks of burn in they settled down and I really started to enjoy them and found they had great sound.  I stumbled across HD650s for $269 so I bought them. They arrived on a Friday and the D2000s were for sale on the Sunday.

The HD650s are just more musical than the D2000s. The D2000 has more bass but I think the HD650 has better bass.  The D2000s are more detailed but poorer quality recordings really suffered and were essentially unlistenable.  The HD650s are an all around better phone. One area I found the D2000s really stood out and are better than the HD650s is gaming. The detailed highs made for a better "CRACK" with gunshots and the huge bass gave weight to everything.  The HD650s are no slouch for gaming but the D2000s are better.

Ultrasone Edition 8 is pretty much the only one that would be an upgrade from the D2000 and is still fairly easy to drive unamped, provided you like the sound signature.

I'd just get an amp first if I were you, as you're gonna end up with one (or two) eventually anyway, and from what I've read the D2000 also improves quite a bit with an amp.

Heya,

Based on your sources, and that you'll use them in public (you mentioned on a train), go with the D5000. It's the D2000, but tweaked to be better and woodback. It's warmer, doesn't have the recessed mids, and has a nice easy going treble. Take everything good about the D2000 and fix it's short comings and you have the D5000. They will play fine from your ipod. If you feel the need to add a portable amp to the mixture, check out the Fiio E11 or something (or ibasso zero, digizoid zo2, etc).

Very best,

Try to get a decend DAC and amp before you spend that one grand. You may be more satisfied with your D2000.

Honestly, I just ordered a pair of these headphones, but from all my research their are a few upgrades you can have done to these, but if you arent using a line out and an amp, then you really arent getting the most out of the source and not giving the headphones the best quality signal to use for driving the drivers on those cans. I understand if you feel that it would decrease portability and stuff, but their are some small models that would still help, FiiO has two small solutions that have a clip on them, and another that just uses the dock connector and a cable from it with a volume rocker and output audio jack on it. It can be pretty minimalistic if you want, and still could give a bit of a bump in quality

Hey guys

First of all thank you so much for the responses. I am delighted to find a community who care as much about sounds as much as i do!

The Amp route sounds interesting, i have seen some by Fiio, the Alo RX, the total bithead, even the Cmoy. I guess ill have to decide on one of these. Any recommendations, there is a huge amount of different preferences on the Amp forum.

Because i'm in Ireland there is nowhere to go to try out new gear, ill have to wait until i get to London or New York to try more phones.

Thanks

Mark
