They are one of the top rated portables you can get.  Outside of the Koss, the only other "rap" cans I would ever recommend to anyone would be the Denon D1100 and the Shure 750 Dj.  If he doesn't mind the bulk, the Shure 750 DJ is well colored, clear and fun with plenty of bass to keep rap and vocalists satisfied.  The denon has serious bass power, its extremely punchy and hard hitting but the mids are recessed and the highs are tinny.

Shure 750 DJ - Your best bet, large but sounds great.  Very fun, very bassy, not harsh

U/sone HFI 580 - Too bulky, Slogic doesn't mesh with vocals, soundstage is odd and echo'ed, hard hitting bass

AKG 518 DJ - no...just...no

BD 770-80 - Not a bad choice but if you want to go the way of beyer, the DT770 32 ohm is the wiser choice for rap IMO but then again its boarder lined neutral and not nearly colored enough to consider "fun".  No new listeners with little to no experience will actually NOT want this type of powerful low end that is slightly warm but with a noticeably more neutral mid and high experience.  Keep to well colored fun sounding sets with good clarity that are well rounded "literally the definition of the Shure 750 dj :)

It looks like it is down to these four from the suggestions (due to ready availability in our area and not keen on the XBs):

Shure 750 DJ

U/sone HFI 580

AKG 518 DJ

BD 770-80

How do these phones compare sound and comfort wise (any pros and cons that we should be aware of)?

We are going to try and test drive these in the next week but would be nice to know if there is anything specific to be looking out for when we do.

SkinnyPuppy I saw a band by the same name in Cambridge, ON, nearly 20 years ago - the same?

Cheers.

Yep, same band. They just released a new album called HanDover.

You got to see them at their best, you're quite lucky.
