Headphones for 14 yr old into rap

Hi,

My son has asked for new cans for birthday and is into rap.

He likes bass but sound quality is important to him. I am trying to train him early and have been able to get him to think "outside the beats" and consider other cans.

We need a closed design (decent isolation cos I don't want to hear his music), source mainly computer (foobar) and am considering a USB dac/amp too (if necessary).

Price range for the headphones up to about $200ish.

What would you recommend?

Any additional info please ask.

Thanks in advance.

I'd look into the Ultrasone HFI-580, Shure SRH-750DJ, AKG K518DJ, M-Audio Q40, Beyerdynamic DT-770, and Phiaton MS400.

XB500's. (if portability is not important)

Audio Technica's ATH-M50? They have good bass.

DT770 Pro 80

later you can upgrade it to a Darth Beyer, supposed to be the best rap headphone ever.

I really liked Shure 840s for hip hop.  They don't have the thumping bass of Ultrasones or XB500's but they have decent bass response and a good over-all sound.  Then again, I don't listen to much modern hip hop which something like HFI-580's or Phaitons MS400 would be more suitable.  Ultrasones are brighter sounding, Phaitons a bit darker, it really depends on what he'd prefer.

V-Moda M-80 fits the bill.

Haven't heard that one before, not saying it wouldn't be good, just haven't heard anyone say that before.

You know..I bet it really would. DJ100 excels with vocals and at the same time has a decent amount of bass.

I have about zero rap albums in my collection, so it could be an interesting test. normal_smile%20.gif

DJ100 most definitely isn't very bass heavy, but I think that's a good thing. I'd much rather give up some bass for good mids.

M50 pads are a must though!

I'm going to go with the Ultrasone 580 or the XB500s.

Thanks for the replies.

It looks like it is down to these four from the suggestions (due to ready availability in our area and not keen on the XBs):

Shure 750 DJ

U/sone HFI 580

AKG 518 DJ

BD 770-80

How do these phones compare sound and comfort wise (any pros and cons that we should be aware of)?

We are going to try and test drive these in the next week but would be nice to know if there is anything specific to be looking out for when we do.

SkinnyPuppy I saw a band by the same name in Cambridge, ON, nearly 20 years ago - the same?

Cheers.

If you do get to test them out, keep in mind that although a lot of bass might have a great "wow" factor at first, that much might become fatiguing or extremely annoying after extensive listening. My recommendation in this situation is always the HFI-580.
