32KHz Audio

Thread Starter

I was just told that using 32KHz on my DAC on my computer is better than using 44KHz.  The only DAC I have that can even handle this is a Burr Brown PCM2702, but this doesn't make any sense to me, seems more like a downgrade.

Can anyone elaborate on this for me?

Whoever told you that doesn't know what they're talking about, i'm afraid.

Most audio files are 44.1 khz, lowering it will do nothing but reduce the quality.

According to Shannon-Nyquist (the ones who formulated the sampling theorem) the highest possible frequency is the half of the sample rate.

44.1 kHz (CD) allows for 22 kHz  max so slightly outside our audible range ( 30 – 20.000 Hz)

32 kHz allows for 16 kHz max so you will lose a substantial amount of the audible range.

It will work as a pretty sharp high off filter.

You are correct, 32 is a substantial down grade.

See how Dan Lavry explains it in this thread.  He claims 60-70 would be the best range.
