Looking for help choosing between Pro 900s, D2000/5000s, or ESW9A

Title says it all. This is my first major set of headphones. My only other sets so far worth noting are a pair of HD25-1 IIs and TF10s.

I primarily listen to JPop, but listen often enough to Electronica, Dubstep, and Jazz, as well as the occasional rock and pop songs.

The Pro 900s, from what I've read, line up with how my TF10s sound, and part of what I like about the TF10s is how well they keep each part of a song distinct from one another. However, the mids always seemed a bit lacking, something I've heard the Pro's have in common, so I'm not too sure about those. Given that JPop is my primary music, the mids are pretty central. The D2000s apparently have less bass than the Pros but better mids, and even moreso on the D5000s. However, the ASW9As seem to be the JPop go-to phones around here, so it wormed its way into my considerations. Can anyone give me a solid guess as to which would be best suited for me?

I'll be running them out of a Fiio e7/Fuze on the go and e7/e9 setup on a Mac at home. I appreciate any help!

Heya,

PRO900's definitely have a lacking of mids. The vocals of Jpop will not be at their best. Only the bass will.

The D2000 has better sub-bass, but less mid-bass (it's flat actually; the PRO900 is a big curve). It has much improved mids, but they are still slightly recessed compared to the bass/treble. Slightly.

The D5000 has all the bass you could want. It's got flat mids. In other words, no faults there. It's ideal for EDM, or any genre frankly. It's an excellent headphone that is basically flat with a very small emphasis on bass.

The ESW9A would be excellent, but note, it's on ear, not over ear.

I would go for the D5k over all of them, in an instant. I say that... well, as someone with all of these headphones. The D5k does it better and is comfortable. The ESW9A sounds wonderful. But, it's on ear, again, so if that's not an issue. Consider them. If that's not good, then go full size, and go Denon D5k.

Very best,

Thanks for the quick response! I'm guessing the D5ks would be a better all-around headphone. Do you think they'd leak more than the ESWs though? I'm going to be using them in plenty of places where it'd be bothersome if it leaked too bad and knowing how Denons usually are, I'm not sure I should go for those as my go-around headphones

I don't notice them leaking any more than my ESW9A's. Neither in, nor out.

If you need real isolation, IEM's are it.

I'm good with my TF10s for IEMs. Right now my budget is ~$500 and I can't find the D5ks for less than 400 atm, so I'll probably just go with the ESW9As and invest in the E7/E9 amps. First chance I get though, I'm definitely gonna get a hold of some D5ks. Seriously regretting missing that sale the other day. Thanks MalVeauX!

Actually, would that be the better investment? Or would the D5ks unamped (temporarily, give or take a month or two) be a better choice? Disregarding portability and the like, just in terms of what I'm getting.

The ESW9A is a superb headphone, on-ear. It's excellent in all ways. But, it's on-ear. If you can stand that, it's an excellent way to go, and relatively inexpensive, to me, for the cost. But the comfort of on-ear hurts it, for me. I prefer the D5k in all ways. But again, that's just my take on it. You'll have to try them both to see what you think. I heartily recommend the D5k to anyone who wants a superb over-ear headphone that is supremely comfortable and has a near flat response with excellent sub bass, that is woodback with a nice nylon sheathed cord. It's the closed headphone to me, before you go open-air high-end. Let that be my simple suggestion.

Very best,
