New headphone + amp for Moon 100d dac

Thread Starter

Hi Headphone fans,

I want to buy a new headphone because my Grado Sr80i is hurting my ears too much, so no Grado for me anymore.

I have a Moon 100d dac which I want to use as a source with my iMac.

So I need a good headphone and a suitable headphone amp, my music will be apple lossless and spotify to find new music directly from my iMac.

Another question I have: How should I connect the iMac to the Moon DAC, usb, toslink or dig. coax?

I have not much experience with headphones or headphone amps, I do have a 5.1 Dali Zensor setup with a Pioneer AVR and a dedicated stereo room which is Audiovector S3 signature + Exposure 3010s amp + cd player.

I listen to Metal, Rock and Classical music.

K.regards

Headphone Recommendations:

V Moda V80 ( $199 US )

They are super comfortable, extremely well built, and the sound quality is simply top of the class.

As far as connecting your iMac to your DAC I have always read that Toslink typically gives better bass response and has less loss, but I personally use USB.

Hello Poldo

I've used Sennheisers, AKG, Ultrasone, and Bose headphones.  By and large the Sennheisers are the most comfortable.

Toslink, Co-Ax or USB?  I think I recall Simaudio recommending Co-Ax - you may want to check their website (or was it in the manual?) I also have the 100D dac.  The advantage of Toslink is that there is no electormagnetic interference.  So I would suggest if it is a long cable then an optical cable would be best.   Also choose toslink if you cannot afford a top-notch co-ax cable.  But having said all that I found a clear superiority in co-ax over both USB and optical once I put in a good cable.

Just commenting on the DAC here. You should be using anything but USB. Simaudio said themselves that the USB implementation is somewhat of a throw away. They're a fantastic company (I was considering buying their 300D or 360D recently but decided to go a different direction) and have the best warranty in the business but I'm puzzled by their USB support. They should just stop putting it in (as it's a throw away on all their units).

I'd recommend Coax, but Optical is very easy to get out of an iMac so that would be the easiest route. What kind of sound are you looking for? Not Grado obviously, but whats you're favorite part of the sound?

What about Grado alessandro? they tend to be smooth headphones. (not fatiguing like some people feel about grado)
