The gist of things:
Want to spend around $150 (less if possible) to get a quality replacement for my dads studio headphones. He mainly plays jazz and classic rock. Or possibly just an amp if his K240 Monitors are a good enough, as he has no headphone amp.
Details:
My father has a studio in our basement and uses AKG K240 Monitors (which are now discontinued) and he likes the sound they produce. He mainly works with jazz, fusion, classic rock, and folk. His favorite artist is John McLaughlin which is who he mainly tries to emulate using the Roland gr33 Guitar Synth when he plays. He's also big on Miles Davis and Jimi Hendrix, just to give you a but of his range. When in the studio he just plugs the K240's straight into the 24channel Tascam m1600. He uses a digital converter to record on Sonar, so he also does a lot of work in his office too. When using the headphones in his office, I'm pretty sure he plugs them directly into the jack on some Altec Lansing desktop speakers. He's a guy of the thought that theres no need to spend a ton of money. As long as it's quality and gets the job done. Headphones have become my new interest so I wanted to get him something a little nicer.
Sorry if thats too much information. I just wanted to be clear on his setup and taste to find the best options for him. I'm looking to spend around $150 to either get him a new set of headphones or if you think the ones he's using now are satisfactory for his situation then an amp for the K240's. I just bought the ATH m50s for my girl because we do more Electronic, Trance, House, etc. production. From what I've read AKG seems to be used more for jazz, classical and classic rock. Which is why I was looking at either the k702's or the newer K240's. However, it seems they all really need an amp. Seeing as my dad doesn't have headphone amps I was looking for a set that would perform well without one (which is why I got the m50s for my gf). Cause I find the k240 monitors my dad has now quite weak and hard to drive. Which is also why I thought maybe just an amp for them would be an option since he seems to like their sound enough. But then again if he likes the k240's as is maybe these new headphones would still outperform them without an amp. Confusing I know hahaha.. Again sorry if too much info, I'm a bit of a perfectionist so I feel it's very important to cover all the details.
Off topic:... Gel/pleather or Velour? Simply preference? Or true difference in sound?
Also totally off topic but wanted to ask this so figured I'd keep it on one thread rather then 2. I'm using TB HPA2 headset with Creative Extigy for my Xbox. The ear pads on them are pretty thin and uncomfortable, your ears/head lay directly on the drivers. Which for multiple driver headphones seems to effect the sound quite a bit too since it muffles the drivers being covered. I'm going to get DT 770 ear pads to replace them. But I can't decide if I should get the gel pads or velour. The gel seems like a tighter seal with the rubber and all. But I've read on here some people say that the leather/gel pads that form a seal can mess with the sound by trapping the bass. And that velour allows the bass to escape more which helps balance the sound. I was going to get the gel ones before I started seeing those statements. Any comments on this? Is there and fact to it or just preference?
