Best Portable Closed Headphones??

Hey everyone, I own the Beats Solo HD and now have about $500 to upgrade. I actually really like the HDs so I was thinking of getting the Beat's Pro. I haven't had any experience with any other brands and after lurking around the forums I noticed the overwhelming negative view the community has for Beat by Dre. So I'm guessing I can get a lot more for my money.

The main thing I'm looking for in a new pair of headphones ( other than good sound quality) is portability. 90% of my listening time is in college or in a bus using my IPhone 4 as the source and I don't even own an amp. I was thinking of getting the Ultrasone Pro 900, but I'm not sure if they'll sound decent without an amp. Can anyone give me any advice or recommendations? Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)

What type of music do you regularly listen to? What are your most played songs?

Hey Sanji,

Mainly Electronic ( Ranging from all types of House to Ambient) then some Hip Hop.

Its up to you but I reccomend against PRO 900's for portable use.  Sure you could use them, however, they're pretty huge and really won't be living up to their potential out of an iPhone.

Check out V-moda crossfade m-80's they sound right up your alley.  A couple other models to look up are Phaiton MS400, Ultrasone HFi-580.  I understand your budget is much higher and while you can get cans that may sound a bit better, portability is diminished.  With your budget, you could get two cans, one for on the go, one for at home (A pair of m80/HFI580 and some Denon d2000's should be under budget if you find good deals)

Best portable? HD25 is nice. That's what Jude (head-fi boss) thinks is best.

Yep, the Sennheiser HD 25 I II.

Sound great

Very well made

light

unobtrusive

just the right size for portability without compromising sound or build quality

Another vote for the HD25. Anything bigger is just not really portable anymore, anything more expensive is overkill for the intended use.

+1 for HD25's. Don't get the SP's though. Make sure you get HD25-1 II

While those HD 25's are great portables, coming from Beats (enjoying that sound sig) they might not be what you're looking for.  The three cans I mentioned are a lot closer to sound for what you're coming from (bass heavy).  Ultrasones are the brightest and can have very powerful bass with some EQ'ing (that's if they don't have enough already) the Phaitons are a darker sound (more like Beats with less emphasis on highs) and the crossfades are pretty well balanced but with strong bass.
