Dolby receiver question

I just purchased a new Dolby Receiver which contains the usual 5 internal amps. (not bad amps either as the unit weighs 54 lbs)

This receiver, like others, quotes two power output ratings for it's internal amps......higher power when it's run in two channel stereo mode, less power when all 5 amps are running for surround.

I'm assuming this has something to do with the power transformer not having to work as hard powering 2 channels vs. 5 channels.

Would the same thing hold true if I were to use the internal amp for only the 2 rear channels and pre-out to separate amps on all other channels?

This receiver doesn't have pre- ins, so I can't patch the rear channel pre-out to the front channel pre-in. Do you think the rear channel amp will increase in power rating anyway?

Thanks.

.As soon as you hit the surround mode the internal amps automatically switch to five channel
