Recommend a newbie some new closed-cans!

Hello all,

I'm a new member to the forums and have been reading and absorbing as much information as I could for a long time. This seems to be the most informative resource of the net and I've appreciated all the knowledge I've read so far. I've always been into high quality audio but just recently had the means to obtain it. I'm looking for a recommendation from people who know headphones.

Ideally, I'm looking for cans that:

A)Have a low-impedance so I'm not limited to just an amped PC or Stereo system

B) Are closed-back since the reason I'm springing for cans instead of speakers are due to my girlfriend watching the TV rather loudly behind me....

C) Great quality - geared for electronica, rock, and let's say 30% gaming.

D) Work well with a Yulong u100

Price is of little concern, but I'd like to keep it under $400. The only headphones I've found that fit the bill so far are the Denon AH-D2000s and Beyer Dyanmic 880T. However, at 600ohms, I'm not entirely sure the amp would fully utilize those. That's why the Denon seem to fit the bill perfectly - with the added bonus of sounding decent out of an ipod. Any comments or suggestions? I'm all ears and open to any recommendations. Thanks a lot guys. :)

CALs (Creative Aurvana Live) $90

the Denon D2000 seems to be the perfect one for closed back at that price range. Shure SRH940 is another option.

Arent these closer to $50?

I've seen it drop to around $65-70 before, but $90 is the normal price I've seen if there is no sale going on.

The Denon 2000 doesn't seem to be available anywhere, and hasn't been in a while.

AD's say they don't know when or if they'll be receiving more of them.

So I'm wondering if it still should be considered a viable option.

Cheapest I've seen them is $60, but that was months ago.

I'll toss the suggestion of the Beyerdynamic DT1350 (~$290). It has very good basic extension, very good isolation, and is very efficient and designed to be a portable. Do note, the bass is probably closer to the fast, tight side rather than the big, fat bass that your electronic might want.  The Sennheiser HD-25 is also a very good choice that won't require large amps and fits those criteria. The better one between the two is pretty much decided by your own taste in headphones -- they're both excellent cans.

Shure SRH840 seem to be going for a good price right now.

Thanks for all the great recommendations everyone.

I think the Shure 940s would be a great option as I'm looking for full-sized cans only.

It's a shame since I see the Denons on Amazon for around 350, but most people reported paying only ~260 for them not so long ago, so I assume they're in short supply and I'd prefer not to be at the butt end of that!

The primary location is at my PC for long periods of  time, so comfort and clarifty are of my utmost concerns. So, that rules out the BT1350s and Senn HD25s, as they seem more like portable headphones. The amp built-in to the Claro Halo seems rated up to 600Ohms, so If I have to give up portable use in favor of quality and construction, I'll certainly do it. I suppose what I'm really looking for is the best closed-ear headphone under $400 dollars that plays well with sound card AMPS. Does anyone know if the BT880 will be alright with a sound card? Thanks again!

to the OP / the dt880s aren't really closed - they still let some sound out, if you want closed closed, put the 770s on your list

770 closed

880 semi

990 open

i have the 990s and i love them, but they are wide open like my grados...

for a lower price alternative, i love my t50rp from fostex, they aren't fully closed either but no sound leaks out the back, plus they were $75 shipped... with a few scant mods they are plenty comfy

I might add that I'm also considering the Ulrasone PRO 750s... They seem to be fitting the bill nicely.

I'll definitely put in a plug for the Denon D2000's.  Very comfortable for longer sessions.  Personally, I use them with electronica, trance, rock, punk, and they fit the bill for me.  I have used them for gaming and although they do perform well, there are still limitations with being a closed can.  I still found there to be a decent level of soundstaging with my Denons though.  The Denons are a little higher in price compared to some of the other options, but in my opinion it's worth the price jump.

Bump.

Any other ideas? I'm thinking Ultrasone Pro 750s. I'll mostly be listening to lossless music, so I'm assuming this will be a best-bet. Any other recommendations?

AMP/DAC combo unit recommendations are welcome as well. :) I'm thinking Yulong u100, or Audinst MX-1.
