My first pair of headphones? (Sennheiser HD201, HD202, or JVC HARX300)

I just signed up for this forum to ask you guys for your opinions, so I'm hoping you can help me out. I'm in the market for a pair of headphones as I don't have my earbuds here at college with me and would like a nice quality pair to listen to music on my laptop.

I'm not looking to splurge a lot of cash on this at all and have narrowed it down to a few solid pairs of headphones that I can order online for $12-20. These are the Sennheiser HD201, Sennheiser HD202, and JVC HARX300.

Now I know there are plenty of threads and reviews concerning these pairs of headphones, but I was hoping to get a direct comparison and perhaps some opinions from people from have tried these headphones. Like I said before, these would be to use with my laptop, maybe my iPod Nano on occasion, and I mainly listen to Hip/Hop, Acoustic, and Techno (in that order). I'm also looking for headphones that are really comfortable. Here's the breakdown of why I need your guys help to decide on which to buy...

HD201 - lightweight, clear sound quality but lacking bass (sounds good for acoustic, just not hip/hop or techno), comfortable, sound too low without an amp (I don't plan on buying anything else along with the headphones atm)

HD202 - overall these sound look good headphones, but I hear they are too tight on your head and the bass is too much (I like bass, but I don't want to ruin acoustic songs with it)

JVCs - don't know too much about these guys, just found them and thought I'd see if anyone had experiences with them. They seem to be solid though.

THANK YOU for the help guys, I really appreciate it!

Jvc have a reputation with their headphones (specially the HARX700/900's) what about the HArx500's? i've read some good reviews on them.

Hmm... also what about the Sony MDR-XD200? They seem legit even though the ear pieces are the size of frisbees tongue_smile.gif

Those things are horrible, believe me.  Our school used to have these, and they have the crappiest quality ever.  It is almost literally an unrefined piece of plastic eek.gif

Doesn't block out noise.  Period.  And uncomfortable as heck.

Though TBH I can't say much about sound quality, only used them for sound recording tongue.gif

jackwess, the HArx500 actually seem pretty good. Have you personally tried them?

I've personally tried the HD201, HD202, and HARX5000 and I'd have to say I prefer the HARX500 sound-wise, though I don't know about the 300. However ,the build quality on the HDs is a tinge better.

The HARX series has a nice reputation for bang-for-your buck around these parts, and you almost can't go wrong. However, if you're looking for something portable and unbreakable I'd audition an HD201 and see what you think. The JVCs may put you off as they're very large and a bit flimsy. However, just talking sound they're hard to beat at that price.

So between the HARX500 and HD201, which would you recommend?

I'd personally recommend the HARX500, but that's just personal opinion. The JVC is more of an involved, emotional can whereas the HD201 is very practical.

For sound quality I'd lean toward the HARX500, for portability the HD201.

I had HD202s years ago. I loved them, but they have a pretty strong emphasis on bass, and I wouldn't say in a good way. Thinking back at it, the bass was flabby all around. Still decent for $20, though.

You won't be disappointed at that price point! Hopefully you'll be wasting your money on high-end gear (like us) soon enough!

I'd love a quality pair of Bose someday, but that's not something for the moment haha

Did you say Bose?!  I'm afraid your Head-Fi membership has now been suspended pending further evaluation.wink_face.gif
