Why isnt iTunes recognizing a cd when I put it into the drive?

Its like pot luck-sometimes it knows its there, sometimes it doesnt.

And im not talking about track names, im talking about just knowing there is a disc in the drive.

 

Is there anything I can do to "force" iTunes to look at my CD drive?

The weird thing is, when I open My Computer to manually play the disc, it then takes me to iTunes (which is my default audio player) but nothing happens.

try and narrow down all the variables. does this happen with the same disk? if it's recognised sometimes but not others, i'd be looking at the drive and/or cable.

 

if it's only certain disks i'd test the disk with other software and even just a normal CD player. i have a CD that no computer drive will recognise at all but it plays find in any stereo. this is really frustrating as i'd like to rip it...
