MDR-V6 1/8 jack question

Had my V6s plugged into my PC a few months back. I got up to get something to eat and tripped over the cable, which broke the jack clean off...confused_face.gif

Just now getting to putting a new jack on them. I tested to find the correct wires for left, right, and ground on the headphone cable, and same with the 1/8th jack.

The result is that if I plug the cable all the way into the plug of my soundcard, it is very distant sounding. If I pull the plug out a bit, it gets better, but if I mess with the balance on the soundcard, it doesn't change the balance, but almost flanges the sound.

Any thoughts? Somebody who has worked on MDR-V6s would probably be very helpful :)

Not quite sure, but it sounds like maybe your soldering bridged a bit to the ground/sheath? Have you checked to make sure there are no internal shorts or bridges?

Yep, I don't see any bridges between anything that isn't supposed to be connected. V6 cables have a thin lacquer on them, which I burned off with an open flame. I just noticed that that may be causing the cables to short on each other. I left the bare cables a bit long since I am a bit of a newbie at soldering.

I hate working with those enamel cables. See if adding some hot glue between them (or some other non-conductive material) helps.

You could also try some fingernail polish or something similar on the exposed cable portion. They do make it in clear :)

Even better. Good call, Pars.

I am actually soldering this to the wires of another Radio Shack extension cable I cut. The wire gauges are different. Could that be causing an impedance problem?

shouldn't really - but it could be you are getting dodgy connections going from the enamel wire - which would. Did everything tin up nicely?

I'm a newbie at soldering, so I can't vouch for the tinning job on the wires :) I won't have time to mess with it tonight, so I'll try again tomorrow.

I finally fixed them. I ended up going to RS and getting a gold connector that had screw-type terminals. The shellac on the wires is a pain in the ass, for sure!
