Sennheiser HD 598 - does it benefit from a headphone amp or need one?

Looking to buy pair of 598's to listen to music/movies on my MacBook Pro.  Can't afford expensive headphone amp with possible exception of ones by NuForce.  Would these sound better with such amps or are they wasted money?

They do improve with a good headamp. But that said, they sound great even run off the MBPro's jack.

 

My advice is to get them. They'll only improve later if you decide to invest in a good dac/amp.

You'll get opinions both side of the coin for the HD598 ~ they run perfectly well out of a headphone laptop out or portable

player but like most headphones will benefit greatly from an entry level Dac/amp.

 

In your case it's not so much the amping so much but the DAC ~ that will clean up your recordings and decode them

in far nicer fashion than your onboard Macbook chipset.

 

How much did you want to spend?

For around $38-$45 you can get the Fiio E6 with an L3 or L9 cable, hooks the E6 up to the LOD port.

I think a dac/amp would be better than an amp.  There are some dac/amp combos that would be nice depending on your budget....

Yeh sorry my post was not very clear ~ I just meant a Dac/amp combo that is either a better DAC than amp or vice versa.

 

Good example would be the new Furutech ADL GT40 ~ nice DAC, eh 'so so' amp section for $600

Whoah eek.gif  Keep in mind this is for HD598   I thought he was looking more at stuff like the Audinst HUD-MX1 and cheaper...
