uprgrading akg 240 monitor, best new Headphones 250$

Last year i got an old pair of akg 240 monitor headphones from my dads work and a behringer xenyx mixer. This was my first pair of quality headphones. Had a pair of steelseries 7h but when i got the akg i found out the 7h was a piece of **** so when it broke i didn't even bother sending them back. After finding this forum i really want to upgrade and i already invested in a HRT music streamer II and a fiio e9 headphone amp. I had been driving the akgs from the Behring mixer headphone out. But the last and most important part is of course what new headphones to buy

I don't care for portability, but its a plus if the headset looks nice. I would prefer open back because i like a big sound stage. I like the sound on the akg 240 but now i want something better so i would probably like something with pretty neutral sounding.

the genres i listen to is mostly trance, house and drum and bass and i love good female vocals. A reference instrumental track could be strobe by Deadmau5

My budget is about 250$

Any help would be greatly appreciated and please excuse any English mistakes, from Norway

Very best,

Tanks for your reply, tried a pair of Beyer dt 770 and Dt 2000  in a Hi Fi store, That was the only high and headphones they had but did not like the sound at all, sounded like a step down from the akg 240, is the beyer 990 similar in sound to the dt 770. Also contemplated getting the sennheiser 650 but could not find someone selling them cheap here in Norway. The Hi Fi store said they would be getting sennheiser 598 next week. Would they play well with trance, drum and bass, house

If you don't mind the lack of bass, I'd add the AKG Q701 to that list. It has amazing sound stage.

Looked long and hard at the AKG Q701, they are my favorite looking headphone and in my head that would probably make them sound better but i have heard that they have even less bass than the 240 and as my source is spotify premium i have no chance of EQ. Mostly read about the k701 anyone now if they added more bass to the Q701

If you're not going to spend much on amp/source, get HD600 instead of HD650

so would the HD 600 be a signifigant upgrade to the sennheiser 598 and i already invested in a HRT music streamer II and a Fiio e9.

I read that the Fiio e9 should work well with most headphones and that it sounds especially good with the AKG k701

The HD600 is on a different league. I have the HD 598 and while I love the sound, I feel it's not as fun and engaging. The bass is certainly better than the AKG, but the sound stage is smaller. The HD 600 should be an upgrade over the 598

most = not the HD650.  I haven't heard the E9 but I know it's price point.  The HD650 is one of the hardest headphones to drive on the market.  My SOHA can't do it to my satisfaction and I guarantee it's more powerful than an E9.  That's not to say you won't love the HD650 out of the E9, you just won't be taking it to it's full potential.  Which is ok, you can always upgrade later.  But if you don't plan on a bigger amp, I think the HD600 will sound more balanced.

You'd have to ask someone who's hear the e9/650 combo (and better amps as well) for a more specific response...

I would go for either AKG Q701, or Sennheiser HD 598/600 based on your preferences. Although I do like the Denon AH-D2000, and absolutely love the "cheap and cheerful"(although this sadly reflects on the design) D1100s, I think one of the other headsets would satisfy you more.
