The ATH-A700 and the ATH-A500 before the 700's have served me well over the last 7 years. They offered me pretty good sound quality and were rather comfortable. The only downside I can see in them is the build quality. The ear pads wear down rather quickly, wires become twisted inside and break and the plastic can hangers have cracked with use. I mainly use them for rock and metalcore music, tv, movies and the occasional game. I have a Xonar DX sound card but would consider getting a cheap amp if needed.
My logical choice would be the new ATH-A900X which seems to have a better build quality, thicker can hangers and better quality ear pads. Cost is not really an issue but I would like to keep it as cheap as possible.
