Headphones for iPhone 4 - help!

 Hi all,

Well, I've decided to up my music listening experience and treat myself to a pair of full size headphones. They will be used on a long public transport commutes, and also in the office (I work as a software developer in a fairly noisy office so I'd love to escape away to some Explosions in the Sky). Problem is, I've spent the last few days trying to decide on a pair and I'm at a loss. Please note these will be connected to my iPhone 4 at all times, so anything that requires an amp will not be useful. Here are my requirements:

  • Good for alternative rock music such as Muse, Coldplay and Radiohead. But I also listen to some instrumental music such as Explosions in the Sky and some fairly heavy rock such as System of a Down. So I guess mids and high end are more crucial than bass.
  • Not too bulky
  • Good at keeping music in, and other sound out. It'll be great to isolate myself in a noisy office and on buses! So from what I know of headphones I'm guessing the 'Closed' style of headphones will be good
  • Price ideally needs to be around £100 - could stretch a bit more if need be though.

I've been looking at the Ultrasone HFI-580's, but I'm a bit turned off by a lot of people saying the mid's are quite bad, and that you need an amp. Loudness is also important to be so if they happen to be quiet without an amp that'll be a downer. I was looking at the Beats Solo HD headphones, but of course I'm turned off by the bad reputation the brand has.

I'd be really grateful if anyone could offer some advice :)

Welcome.  Are you adverse to IEMs? If lack of bulk, ease of drive, good mids and bass, and isolation from surrounding commute are facets of your would-be set-up, then IEMs are probably the way to go, especially given your price range.

Check out the Etymotic HF5 and HF3, the latter of the two having the three-button control and microphone needed to use with an iPhone!

Hope this works out for you.

I believe IEMs are your answer. I had the ER6i and would definitely recommend that. Alternatively some of the lower end Shure IEMs.

Klipsch S4i are great for on the go and affordable. <$50 on Ebay if your patient. I used to have the Shure SE310 and really don't miss them or their breaking cable to put up with. I have'nt even sent them in for replacement for $80 because of going this route. Others say the highs are scratchy or whatever but with my ACC files and bithead amp I really like them. BTW, I use them with no EQ setting from the iPod/Phone.
