Need Advice/Help for 2.0 Speakers!!! (New to the audiophile world)

Thread Starter

I know that there have been a lot of thread posts similar to this and such, so sorry in advance for posting something like this again!

I am completely new to the audiophile world, and could use some serious advice and recommendations on good speakers for my set-up.

I am looking for a 2.0 speaker that is good for music AND gaming. I don't want it to distort at high volumes or get jumbled up just because there is a lot of different noises (loud explosions, etc.).

Looking to pay anywhere between $200.00-$500.00.

The set-up is typically going to be hooked into my DELL U2410 MONITOR, so that I can run an HDMI cable from my Xbox360 to the monitor.

I've currently been looking at:

1. Bose Companion 20 Speakers - $249.99

2. Audioengine A2 - $199.99

3. Swan M200MKII - $279.99

4. Swan M50W - $279.99

5. Swan M200MKIII - $399.99

6. M-Audio BX5A - $299.99 (Amazon - $149.99)

7. M-Audio BX8A - $499.99 (Amazon - $249.99)

8. Audioengine A5 - $299.99

9. Prodipe Pro Ribbon 5 - $279.99

I've searched the forums of head-fi and read as much as I could on every single one of these speakers, but the reviews are so mixed, that I have been unable to actually decide on which one to get.

I suppose I am looking for the best bang for my buck kind of deal!

I could also use advice on a UDAC . . . been looking at the Nuforce Icon uDAC-2.

Any advice to get through this turmoil, will be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!!!

The Swan MKIII's seem to be well liked on here. I'd wager the BX8As would be nice but they'll be enormous and unless you have a lot of space it's harder to give them room to breathe, height off the desk and all that. I have monitors with a 5" woofer and they dominate my desk, I couldn't fit anything bigger.

Your budget would also cover KRKs and things like that. Ideally you'd be best off finding a music shop and giving the stuff they sell a listen. Anything with a 5" driver and up is going to give you decent bass (relative to some cheap PC 2.1 setup). Also bear in mind you may need a volume control for them unless you're happy adjusting them individually.

What about passive speakers and an amp, if you want actives then the prodipe pro 8's would be more suitable for you.

Also you should avoid the udac2 because it doesn't perform well at all.

@Somenambulist/@JRG1990:

I have taken a listen to everything but the Prodipe and Swan series. I just can't seem to find them in any music store that I have been to. The best I can do with those are just reading reviews and watching reviews on youtube. Okay, so I am going to ditch the udac2, and just go with a regular set of speakers. Out of your personal opinions, which of those speakers on that list or of your own do you think is the best for my needs.

What would you recommend to be a good amp?

Go to a Guitar Center they have a lot of studio monitors that you can actually try out. My vote would be for rokit 6, or I think you need at least a 6in woofer in order to not miss a sub.

What have you guys heard about the M-Audio BX8 D2??

I purchased the Audioengine A5+ recently and I'm very happy with them.  They are actually very fun and musical to listen too.  They don't seem lifeless like a lot of other speakers I have heard in the past.  I may purchase Audioengine subwoofer in the future, but for right now they are sufficient for my needs and have tight, punchy bass.  It's good even for my hiphop collection.

Id rule out the bose and audioengines straight away for being over priced, the m-audio's are good but can be a bit thin and too cold sounding, i've never even seen the swan speakers, the prodipes are almost exactly the same as the krk's just a bit clearer in the mids, the prodipe pro 8's would suit you well,  I think the behringer B1031A http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/B1031A.aspx would suit you even better there will go really loud and still sound good they also have excellent bass down to -35hz to capture the explosions.

If you want to go passive for an amp something like this http://www.amazon.com/Dayton-Audio-APA150-Power-Amplifier/dp/B000VKXLBO/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1322431254&sr=8-3 , or this  http://www.amazon.com/Harman-Kardon-HK-3490-Receiver/dp/B00198F89A/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1322431279&sr=8-11 .

Actually, Audioengine delivers on sound quality.  Everything you buy is overpriced.  But when you compare speakers in the same price range as the Audioengine speakers, it's not really overpriced.  I have listened to many studio monitors as well from KRK, Blue Sky, Mackie, Adam, etc.  Audioengine offers a lot for the price.  I'm happy with them.  I'm not an Audioengine fanboy by any means, I just decided to buy them based on the reviews I've seen of them and I have not been disappointed.

There not bad speakers but I wouldn't pay that much for them, the simlar priced mackies , krk , prodipe , behringers, various passive speakers are better for the same money, for the a2's price tag of $200 you can have a pair of the much better in everyway Behringer Truth B1030a. So I do think there overpriced for what you get.

I just listened to the M-Audio BX5 D2 and M-Audio BX8 D2, can someone justify the price point difference between these. Is it really worth it to spend $250 more for a larger woofer (~3") and lower frequency response.

BX5 D2 - 50 hz - 40k hz

BX8 D2 - 35 hz - 40k hz

Does anyone else know any difference between these two?

I think I just want to get a good set of speakers before getting an amplifier. Might splurge on that later.

The bx8 has a more powerful amp aswell, your find the smaller woofer of the bx5 handles the midrange better than the bx8, but the bx8 has better low frequency extension. Also these speakers are active no amp is required they already have 1 built in.

In your personal opinion would you dish out an extra $250 for the bx8 or just stick with bx5?

Where are you getting these prices from $250 sounds like it's a bit too expensive, the difference is $100 on amazon, Id go with the bx8 for the extra spl and the fact they would do better at high volumes id always go for the bigger louder speakers.

Also just wondering, can I use this wire: http://www.amazon.com/Hosa-Right-Stereo-Female-CYX-402F/dp/B00394LYIQ/ref=sr_1_11?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1322445296&sr=1-11

to connect the speakers to a 3.5mm jack located on my monitor: DELL U2410

and access the speakers via HDMI through my xbox 360?

Or should I try to set it up using RCA cables?

If you have any clue how to do any of these things, could you please provide a kind of guide to help me, it would be greatly appreciated! thank you!!
